We go from Malaysia by van to Thailand. Is it correct that we need just our passport and our first stay in Thailand to get visa at arrival?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Travelers from Malaysia to Thailand by van need to present their passports and may require a visa on arrival, but they must also carry cash proof of funds (20,000 baht per person) to meet visa exemption requirements. It’s advisable to have pre-booked accommodation details on hand as well.

Yes. Sorry, you have to carry cash at the border and you must use a bank statement at Embassys and consulates.
Ron *******
You carry the cash but don't show it until or if they ask to see it.

Thank you! So good to know. I hate carrying cash. So we actually show them the money? That is something else.

We must carry the actual cash? Proof of funds in account is not sufficient? Tod Daniels Ron Angel

It’s 10.000b proof of funds for visa exemption. As a lot of people put bribes in their passports at Sadao border you can be almost sure they will ask you for the cash if you don’t.
20k each person or together? (My wife, baby, myself)

while the actual rule states 10K for visa exempt or visa-on-arrival, many officers (at airports and land borders) are asking for 20K baht

Okay, so it’s just two requirements. That’s good to know.

If your coming in visa exempt at one of the Southern land borders, be sure to carry cash to the tune of 20,000 baht per person. Any exchanable currency or travellers cheques are acceptable. They may also ask to see some type of pre booked accomodation. They are not particularly user friendly at those crossings.

They did not accept my ringgit at Sadao and made me exchange them. That was a few years ago though.
