TLDR : Answer Summary
A South African in Thailand inquired about re-entering Thailand from Malaysia and whether they would qualify for the usual Visa Exempt Entry stamp or if it was only available when returning from their country of origin. Responses clarified that South Africans are not eligible for a Visa on Arrival; instead, they can use the Visa Exempt Entry, allowing a 30-day stay. It's advisable to have proof of funds (20,000 baht) and proof of onward travel when re-entering the country, especially if they have an extensive history of living in Thailand on tourist visas.
It sounds like you definitely need to get a new 30 day visa exempt entry stamp while you wait for your documents to be processed so you can go get a Non-B visa.
I'd say whether you're going to a land border and bouncing out and back in OR if you're flying out and back in have 20K baht in cash to meet the proof of funds requirement if you are asked for it when you stamp back into the country
there is no visa that would let you stay inside the country since December. You would have had to left and gotten a tourist visa or a 30 day visa exempt entry and then extended that.
you can't get TWO 30 day extensions on the same entry stamp :/ you can get one 30 day extension per entry on a 30 day visa exempt stamp or a 60 day tourist visa stamp .
South Africans don't get a visa on arrival :/ You get 30 day visa exempt entry stamps. If you have an extensive history of living here on tourist visas or visa exempt entry stamps you could be asked for proof of funds, proof of onward travel and proof of a hotel booking. I'd at least have the 20K baht in cash for proof of funds if you're going to fly out and back in for a 30 day visa exempt entry stamp
