What are the requirements for obtaining a retirement visa in Thailand as a Canadian expat?

Hi all! Any Canadians in the room? I'm a retired man from Montreal now living in Thailand but still on visa exemptions because filling the form is complicated, more than I thought.

Last week, I was in Laos, in order to get the 3 month retirement visa. After weeks of gathering all the documents, I felt it would go smoothly.

I had the photos, I had proof of health insurance, and certifications about my retirement incomes, both from my personnal pension plan (the canadian embassy in Thailand does no longer provide proof of income) and also from the Québec pension plan. I am above the required 65 000 bahts monthly.

I had a big surprise though : I needed to get a criminal record clearance from the RCMP. Never had I heard about such a requirement for the thai visa. Afterall, my finger prints were taken each time I arrived at Suvarnabhumi airport and I never had a problem there.

So here I was in Vientiane, stuck with this obstacle. How do I get such a clearance? I learned that I needed my fingerprints taken by the local police, send them to Canada for an RCMP approved firm to digitalize them and transfer the results to the RCMP. This process would take weeks, especially since the postal service is not at full gear in Canada.

The thing is that the way the questionnaire is built, you don't know all the requirements in advance because if you are missing a document, you cannot move forward to the next page. So I am wondering what the next surprise will be.

Seriously considering hiring an agency to get the visa quickly but finding one at a decent price is quite a challenge. It would cost somewhere between 50 and 60 k$.

Any brilliant advice would be greatly appreciated at this point.

Thanks in advance folks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A retired Canadian expat living in Thailand faces challenges while attempting to secure a retirement visa. He discovered unexpected requirements like a criminal record clearance from the RCMP, which he was unaware of when applying for his visa. He learns that he applied for the wrong visa, which contributed to his difficulties. Community members suggest that he should have applied for a Non-O visa instead, which has simpler requirements. They advise hiring an agency for assistance in the process, highlighting alternatives that exist for a smoother application.

follow the instructions for Non O visa.

I had an agent that we met by coincidence at the border who took care of everything while I enjoyed a three day break, she made it all so painless and was very reasonably priced.

I applied for and received a non o visa by going to Laos and it was quite painless. I agree with the previous comments regarding you applying for the wrong visa, I didn’t need the add on requirements that you described.

Fellow Canadian, When you decide to throw in the towel of stress and silliness, (as many do), send a message to
@THAI *****************************
and explain your circumstance. 15 months visa =extension should be about 34k baht. Good luck.

I talked with them yesterday... it's over 60k

@Michel *******
A fixer can do it at the Thai border for 9k baht. They go with you in Laos, you go to hotel, and a few days later she come back with the visa in your passport.

do you have the financials?

Doesn't sound right. TVC gave you a written quote for 3 month visa + 12 month extension for over 60k?
Maxim ***********
@Todd ********
TVC is the most expensive visa agent in Thailand. But they are the most helpful so it's like an elite service in a way. It's 60k+ because it's his first year. Next year, it will be much cheaper. They have a reduced price right now for Non-O based on marriage (55k for 15 months, done in Buriram). They were charging 80k, a few months ago (35k+45k). 55k is still the most expensive around but TVC are top notch.

yep... most are also above 60k

Apply for a Non O inside Thailand, no RCMP check required and no insurance proof required

You should probably hire a competent, reputable agent for your first attempt.

Copy or photograph all the forms so you can renew it yourself next time.

It should cost no more than ฿15,000 THB all in, including a multiple re-entry permit and all other fees. it will be initially valid for 90 days. Then, you renew it annually.

@Brook *******
for intial visa + extension it will not cost under 25,000 anywhere. Over 30k is more likely
Gordon *******
@Todd ********
About correct,then much cheaper next year
Todd *********
@Gordon ******
yes, as the next year is only another extension
Gordon *******
@Todd ********
Yes indeed

Look again carefully

Non -OA visa

Non -O visa

Very different requirements

Use an agent if paperwork isn't your strong point
Wannikea *********
You applied for the wrong Visa, you applied for the OA Visa which you can only get in your home country. You need to apply for the Non immigrant O Visa, which has zero requirements except for being 50 and the funding.

I applied for the non-immigrant Visa (O)

@Michel *******
No you dit not, you applied for a Non-OA.
Wannikea *********
@Michel *******
not if you were requested to supply health insurance or a background check.
Brandon ************
First of all, the non-O visa doesn't require any of that. So you are applying for the wrong visa.

Second, all the requirements are on the embassy website.

ehhhhhh no 👎

@Michel *******
look at the screenshot
@Brandon ***********
attached. Is this the visa you applied for? This what is known as the Non-O visa, its a 90 day visa which you then extend for 12 months inside Thailand
Brandon ************
@Michel *******
no, you didn't. The non-O does not require proof of insurance, health certificate, or criminal records check. Only the non-OA requires those.
