can anyone confirm please that for the extension of stay (for a year) based on marriage to a Thai citizen, the bank deposit required is 400k for TWO MONTHS before application is accepted and NO period AFTER? The latest handout from Hua Hin immigration does not require or mention (unlike the extension based on retirement) a period afterwards or at all for the rest of the year. Thank you. I am aware of other alternatives, this is the one i would like to definitely like confirmed
Answer summary
The requirement for extending a stay in Thailand for a year based on marriage to a Thai citizen generally includes a bank deposit of 400,000 Baht, which must remain in the account for at least two months before the application. The latest information from Hua Hin Immigration does not specify a requirement for maintaining this balance after the application period, unlike the retirement extension. However, there are suggestions from users to keep the funds deposited during the approval period for safety.

400,000 Baht is chump change (Less than $12,000 USD). By the time you move it in and out and put it somewhere else most of the financial gain, if any, you may have made is lost. Best thing to do is open a seperate account and just leave that 400K there for good. It's there every year when you need it, no need to worry about having it back on time or for long enough or even not having enough.

Jonathan Pressburger So people are saying they will move the money to their home country when not needed for bank interest rather than leave in in a Thai account where you earn little or nothing. Let's say they cannot invest it in shares etc because they cannot afford to lose it they need to have it when the time comes so bank interest is a safe investment. It needs to be in Thailand for 3 months minimum to be safe so it appears on the statements. Let's say it is in their home country for 9 full months and they can get 4% interest. If I transfer 400,000 Baht today to the US today with Wise I am going to get 11,918.93 cents (assuming the receiving bank charges no fees. (11,918.93 X 4 %) * 9 /12 = 357.57 interest I will earn for the 9 months. Now I have 12,276 dollars in my foreign account. Now if I transfer this back to Thailand I will get roughly 408,000 baht. Of course I could get more if the rates have improved but I could also get way less if rates have declined. So in a perfect storm with no change in rates over 9 months I gain $276. If $276 dollars is worth that much to you , to go to all that trouble and risk not having the money at the time or not satisfying immigration that the money has come from the right place and been there for the right time then that's a bit sad. If you need to spend that 400K for immediate living expenses then where does it come from next year. It's far easier to accept you "MAY" lose $276 and just put it in the account and leave it where it is and you are already prepared for renewal without worrying about money. So let me clarify as yes maybe I did not word it correctly. I did not mean I'd light a match and burn 12K I meant what you can earn on $12K is really very little so if you have the means it is easier and wiser just to put the funds in place and leave them there.

In pattaya, you can start spending the 400k after you apply, during the 30 day awaiting approval. I do every year,

I am in the same situation but in Udon Thani. I was told exactly the same thing by Udon Immigration and my bank also confirmed it (Kasikorn)

All marriage extension requests are sent to Bangkok or Chiang Mai for approval, so there is an 'under consideration stamp' valid for usually 30 days but it can be longer if they are busy. Most offices do not re-check you account balance during this period but some do so I recommend keeping the balance util your extension is apporved.

Ian Morrison so what's the rational sending them to Bangkok or Chiang Mai for approval.

Yes this is correct. Although best to count 3 months. 2 before and 1 month during the under consideration period. Just to be safe. Good luck.

Correct, although it's probably safer to keep the money in the bank during the under consideration period and wait until you have the actual extension stamped in your passport
