TLDR : Answer Summary
When applying for a tourist visa to Thailand, there is some confusion regarding whether an itinerary is required. Many commenters suggest that while a full itinerary may not be necessary, details such as confirmed accommodation for the first night and proof of outward travel (flight tickets) may be requested. Additionally, some embassies ask for bank statements to prove financial capability for the trip. It is important to note that requirements may vary significantly depending on the embassy and the officer reviewing the application.

Being a tourist full stop requires an itinerary- places, length of stay, accommodation. Give them that

Base it on current rough plans. Nobody cares if it changes. If your first night is booked then include that.

My guess would be that if you don't have family that you will be staying with when in Thailand and have no plans on what to do or where to stay then you're not likely to be a tourist so don't meet the requirements of a tourist visa. All you probably need is hotel booking, sightseeing plans etc. Probably even just a list of hotels and some details of what you plan to do would do (go to Pattaya to get drunk & laid might not be a good plan).

If they are asking for a full itinerary. Accommodation has to be shown as booked and confirmed. Be careful, only book accommodation that offers free cancellation and utilise this option once in possession of your tourist visa. It's unethical towards the accommodation owners but what you are being asked to do by some embassies is just ridiculous.

For mine, I just made up a route from BKK across to Kanchanaburi then south down to Krabi, booked hotels with free cancellation policies staying 3 or 4 nights ending with 10 nights in Krabi and flying out of there to Kuala Lumpur on my 59th day.

Once in possession of the tourist visa I cancelled all accommodation bookings and only kept the flight remaining for proof on entering Thailand. Thankfully, the throwaway fight only cost 26€.

Kim Nielsen My response was "if they are asking for a full itinerary?".

Reading other posts it appears different embassies, perhaps even different staff within those embassies, most certainly request anywhere between no to full itineraries. I only pointed out that as a Spanish resident at the time, a full and comprehensive itinerary along with an exit plan (flight) was requested of me from Spanish embassy. I understand that someone else asking for the same visa from the same office might receive a a very different reply. I was out through the full wash cycle.

It does not only depend on the embassy, it mainly depends on the officer (Embassies Employee) processing the application and the officer’s interpretation of the requirements.

It looks like some countries are exempt from applying for visas in Thailand which is the case from here in Australia. When I go there and it's at least once a year. I bring a copy of the digital card, accommodation and flights. I also bring a copy of my meds from my doc just in case. Looks like the countries not exempt are required to provide more info

And thailand requests because to many tourists stay. Work off laptop. Sell drugs. Scamming. Or do tour guiding jobs. Thailand doesn't want those people.

Someone told me it's a round trip flight information along with the proof of accommodation (Hotel, Dorm, Guesthouse etc) but some people prefer to accommodate themselves according to what the location has to offer in favor of their taste of living. As these optimistic people are also creative yet follow the righteous path and they reserve hotels (that have "pay at the property" facility) through booking websites for the requirement of visa application (sometimes they also book hotels for a day or two so they can decide if they will be extending or changing), moreover, they reserve their accommodation (with the "Pay At Property" facility) according to the date of their arrival and departure just to let the officer know that they will obviously will be sleeping on a comfy bed.

Anyways, I don't know if it's a real thing because I saw this in a movie, have a safe journey.

Edit 1: There was also a part where the one traveling asked his Travel Agent to reserve a ticket of a flight that was supposedly to fly after a month with return after a few days and he used that reservation (which the agent actually gave him for free because it was just a reservation which could have been cancelled or changed) for the visa application.

Edit 2: Oh, I just saw the ending. The person who did all actually changed his plan after he got his visa and decided to travel two weeks later to his reserved flight and accommodation and due to that he cancelled the flight reservation (which he received for free, actually) and the accommodation reservation as well. (which he was supposed to "Pay at the property" on arrival).

Edit 3: Oh, shit, the movie had post credit scenes too. The country he was traveling to also had another requirement called TDAC which is a document that consists of the same details (accommodation, round trip information) and is necessary to obtain prior arrival, (its free and is filled and received online instantly) however, he easily filled the form to receive the document because he had the flight details (which were booked and paid this time, actually) and he used the same old reservation of accommodation online to pay at the property upon arrival trick for the form.

Brenda Hegwood they did change the rules towards the end of 2025 where you need to show finances, typically this is only 20k baht or equivalent. I would upload just one statement showing this value

If immigration asks you for your travel plans

- show accommodation booking

- show outward travel ticket

And possibly you may get asked to show cash to the value of 20,000 baht

That’s it

Robert Ward yes. That is the issue we all face. You can book and cancel. You might be fine. But even the arrival cards ask where you are staying and the details.

We go for 3 months at a time and I never want to book all the air bnbs before we go to a new area. Because who knows? But it is their requirement

Melissa Batch no it's not the requirement at all - they only want to know the 1st accommodation. Where you stay are reported by the hotels condos whatever.

Very few embassies actually require bookings for a tourist visa.

The online application just asks for your arrival date, exit date, and sometimes flight number. All of those can be easily found online from any airline or travel search engine.

Then they ask for the first place you plan on staying, so just put the hotel you were looking at.

hi Brandon. I was granted a tourist visa by the London embassy a couple of weeks ago. I'm taking advantage of China's 10-day transit visa so will be arriving BKK from Chengdu.

London embassy asked for my e-tickets.

I sent them the Chengdu to Bangkok ticket but that wasn't enough. They sent a further request for my e-ticket from London to Chengdu.

Once I provided everything, as requested, they issued my tourist visa.

I'm not sure I need the visa for a 2 week trip with a history of regular visits with no extensions but I wanted peace of mind.

Possibly true with some embassies but for my first 60 day tourist visa obtained via Spanish Embassy in Madrid. I had to give them a genuine "full" itinerary. Accommodation had to be shown as booked and confirmed, towns and my travel intentions, e.g. sailing, trekking, attractions were all requested of me.

I just made up a route from BKK across to Kanchanaburi then south down to Krabi, booked hotels with free cancellation policies staying 3 or 4 nights ending with 10 nights in Krabi and flying out of there to Kuala Lumpur on my 59th day.

Of course once in possession of the tourist visa I cancelled all accommodation bookings and only kept the flight remaining for proof on entering Thailand. Thankfully, the throwaway fight only cost 26€. It was an intense requirement.

For London that normally only happens in special cases. Like someone applying through London with a foreign passport, or someone applying for a visa and the processing time will take longer than the initial date the person put on the application.
