Hi everyone,

I have a valid IDP for both car and motorcycle and would like to convert it to Thai driver’s licenses in Chiang Mai.

So far, I have:

* DTV visa

* TM30 registered at my Chiang Mai address

* Health certificate (already scheduled)

* Passport and visa copies

I entered Thailand only one week ago on a DTV visa, so I have not completed my first 90-day report yet.

I’ve seen some posts mentioning the TM47. Since I haven’t reached 90 days yet, will this be a problem? Do I need to wait for my first 90-day report before applying for the conversion?

If anyone has done this recently in Chiang Mai, I’d appreciate any advice on the required documents and the process.

Thank you!
Answer summary
The user seeks advice on converting an international driving permit (IDP) to a Thai driver's license in Chiang Mai, mentioning their current visa status and lack of a 90-day report. Community comments provide various insights, indicating that a TM47 might not be necessary for this conversion, though a Certificate of Residence and a medical certificate are required. Many users suggest asking directly at the Department of Land Transport (DLT) for their specific needs, mentioning the availability of a fast-track service for obtaining residency certificates. Overall, the process seems manageable, and several commenters share their positive experiences.

I did mine in Chiang Mai, very, easy.

Go to department if transport, they will give you a list of what you need and boom you in. They were extremely helpful.

Typically one certificate of residence from immigration and a copy of it for the second license is acceptable. Same goes for the doctor's certificate.

Unlike what other claim here, I never needed two separate residence certificates (or two medial certificates) - one original plus one photocopy was aways enough when applying (or extending) for both car and motorcycle license at the same time in Chiang Mai. IDP however was required at time of „converting“ to Thai DL - or alternatively pricy confirmation by your consulate. Luckily Thailand finally accepts the most recent 1968 (Vienna) convention IDP now.

You don't need the IDP, unless your home licenses are not in English. You do, however, need a residency certificate. CM immigration was at one point offering next day for 500 baht each, noting you will need two, but not sure on current status. Colonel Visa directly across from CM immigration charges 1k each if you don't want to line up and get pics, fill in form etc.

You also need to watch the DLT learning video online.

Good news, with existing foreign licenses ,you don't need an appointment at the DLT on Hang Dong Road. Counter 27 deals with foreigners.

You need to visit the immigration office that serves where you live and obtain residence certificates, one for each licence you will apply for. Same with medical certificates, 2 copies.

TM47 stands for Tor Mor 47, translated into English; Immigration 47

Why do you think you need Immigration form to acknowledge your address and report that you are 90 days in Thailand for a driving license?

Visit the Ministry of Land Transport and just ask them what they need, how many copies for motorbike license and car license, if passport pictures are needed, how much it cost, if you need to do the on-line movie.

And they all visited the Minsitry of Land Transport.

But you might, based on their experience get a Thai driving licence at Immigration as you want to use TM forms.

You need a "Certificate of Residence". It was possible to get one in CM before a 90 Day report.unless things have changed. If it was me I would go to the agent in the car park opposite the Airport Immigration Office. I think it's about 1k for next day service. A driving school I know does it for 1200 but that includes medical too.

Go ask the immigration its the easiest way. According to google chiang mai doesnt ask for 90day report. Chon buri didnt.
