What are the options for extending my stay in Thailand if I arrive during the 60-day visa exemption and want to avoid the new 30-day limit?

I have a flight booked for 60 days in June can you still fly out of Thailand and come back and get another 30 days ?

thank you
Answer summary
The user is inquiring about their options to stay in Thailand for longer than their initial 60-day visa exemption, especially in light of potential changes to the visa rules. Comments suggest that legislation reducing the exemption to 30 days may be imminent, but it’s uncertain when this will officially take effect. Many recommend applying for a 60-day tourist visa beforehand or considering a short trip to a nearby country to reset the visa, while some discuss potential extensions at local immigration offices.

If you only get stamped for 30 days & not the 60 days you’re hoping for, a local immigration office will extend that entry by a further 30 days for 1,900 thb, without leaving Thailand.

I am flying into Bangkok 28 May. Return flight in 60 days after. My intention was to stay 60 days visa exempt. No time to get a 60 day visa now.

I knew these changes were coming in at some stage. I tried to be pre-emptive and organise a 60 day visa through the Australian Thai Consulate. It refused my application stating I didn't need one due to the 60 day visa exemption.

I have options with a 30 day extension or a quick trip to a another country to reset the visa free. Just annoying that I fall between the cracks in timing. Still, looking forward to my Thai trip.

Listen a couple of things no date yet is the big one but you do have a reason to worry

Some are saying your can get a 30 day extension

But there is no mention of if you can get a 30 days under the new rules and if you can how much it will be

Plus will they let you enter when your flight is booked for longer that your stay is allowed

Just get 30 days or not at all in future spend your money in other countries Vietnam Loas Cambodia, shri Lanka Malaysia..

Thailand exchange rate is poor making it more and more expensive the government was smart implementing 60 days and stupid to wind back to 30 ...

John Connor surely if, in your words, it's becoming "more and more expensive" then 30 days would be more than enough

You’re doing right thing. Spend $100 to make sure you have no issues on your big trip, heck yeah. Cheap insurance if ask me.

And if one can’t afford it, you are the person Thailands doesn’t want. lol
Andrew ********
Andrew ********
That all depends on how they implement the change.

I’m in the same boat. I’m going for 83 days starting in July. But applying for visa for my serenity.

Andrew Patron Extensions aren’t guaranteed and onward travel should be within your permitted period of stay.
Andrew ********

Ralph Tyson yeah. But I figure since I met their requirements and am getting a visa plus taking a trip to Malaysia in the around day 57 anyways I won’t have an issue getting back in under an extension or a 30 tourist exempt.

This will be my first tourist visa extension. I’m not on my 5th border run. I think I’ll be fine especially if I do it right with the first 60 day Multiple entry Tourist visa.

This is all theory until you show up to immigration. lol

Andrew Patron same here. i booked a 60 day trip with airline for july 3. I'll apply for a METV 6 month visa in June. Its about $ 160. add with the expensive airfare.
Andrew ********
Andrew ********
Larry Wheeler I was going for the 60day tourist with multiple entries and then add 30 day. I meet all requirements so I’m not worried.
Andrew ********
Andrew ********
Larry Wheeler I feel it’s a small price to pay. But you’ll sleep better between now and July 3.

I’ve never experienced it before, but I’m assuming Thailand knows that people have bought tickets so they’ll probably set a date in the future that the new rules.

But just in case…

Sorry I didn’t explain properly if the 30 day entry comes in before I get there

Phil Broadbent Just go to a Thai Consulate or Embassy in your home country and take passport and other ID and they will sort you a 60 day for a fee of course, Easy as

Gary Flowers where can you go into Consulate as u can not in Australia only do online
Graham ******

Phil Broadbent so you only want 60 days this time then get a tourist visa in case visa exempt is 30 days by then and you are refused a 30 day extension because you have just received one

The reduction from 60 days to 30 days has been agreed. Why not just apply for a visa?
Brandon ************
Brandon ************
Why would you?

Apply for a tourist visa right now. You have plenty of time to get it.

Or apply for a 30-day extension from the immigration office in Thailand.

Gary Flowers Thai citizens can use the personal service of their embassies as usual. But you as a foreigner, cannot get any service done, you cannot apply for a visa inside the embassy or consulate. You need to apply online though the E-Visa system.

oh ok, We had to go to Sydney a few years ago to get my wife's Thai passport and Thai ID renewed, Thanks

there is no not going to the embassy. All visas are done online now. They won't even let you on the embassy property.
Brandon ************

@Phil **********
If you were here a month ago visa exempt WITH an extension, and plan to come again, you are not likely to have a good time trying to enter TWO MORE TIMES visa exempt. I would expect you to be denied entry at that point for abusing tourist entries. This is exactly what they have been ccracking down on.
Greg ***********
Greg ***********
Phil Broadbent then this is the more an urgent reason to apply for the 60-days Tourist Visa for your next vacation. Don't travel visa-exempt, again
