My husband and I are due to travel to Thailand from the UK arriving 5th December 2026 and staying for 90 days. We did the same last year and the previous year utilising the visa exemption scheme. When we went to immigration to extend our second trip by 30 days we were told the rules had changed and we could only have a 7 day extension as we had already had an extension that year. The immigration officer did agree to extend by 30 days as he could see that we had return flight back to the UK booked and that we had done the same thing previously. Apparently any extension was at the discretion of the immigration officer.
We know that the 60 day visa exemption will reduce to 30 days on 15th September so we will need visas for our next trip but are not sure what type of visa we need to apply for. Not intending to travel out of Thailand during the trip.
If we apply for 60 day tourist visa, will we be able to obtain another 30 days ? I have emailed Thai embassy in London but no reply so far. Been told by some people that we will be fine to get an extension as the one extension rule applies only to the visa exemption scheme.
Please can anyone advise exactly which visa will be correct for a 3 month stay for tourism purposes. We are over 50 and in receipt of pensions, have savings and full insurance. No intention of working, running a business or retiring to Thailand - we just love it there and go to avoid winter in the UK.
I appreciate that I may need to go to Thai embassy make a face to face enquiry if they dont reply to my email but just wanted to see if anyone is doing the same as us and can confirm what they are doing.
Thanks
