What are the options for buying a car as a foreigner with a DTV visa in Thailand?

Hi everyone!

My name is Igor, I’ve been living in Thailand for almost two years and I currently have a DTV visa.

I’m trying to buy a car here, but it seems quite difficult to get financing or installment options with my visa status. From what I understand, most banks and dealers are not very flexible with foreigners on DTV visas.

Maybe someone has been in a similar situation and can share their experience?

I’m looking for options such as:

– dealers who work with foreigners

– in-house installment plans directly with the shop/dealer

– reliable services that help foreigners buy a car in Thailand

– any other legal and safe options

I’m not looking for anything shady — just trying to understand what options are available and how people usually solve this here.

Would really appreciate any advice or recommendations. Thank you!
Summary so far
Igor is seeking advice on buying a car in Thailand while holding a DTV (Digital Nomad) visa, facing challenges with financing and installment options due to his visa status. The community comments suggest that financing is generally difficult for foreigners on tourist visas like the DTV, and most recommend paying in cash or considering second-hand cars. Some advice includes looking for flexible dealers, relying on personal loans from their home country, or even having a partner in Thailand help with the purchase. Overall, the consensus emphasizes the difficulties of financing for DTV holders and suggests opting for cash purchases instead.

Just like in other countries, if you don't have the money for a car, don't buy.

Unless you need it for your job, which is impossible for DTV it does not make sense.

Even with a work permit it is not as easy as it is for Thai. I don't think you will find anything with a DTV (and it is expected as it is a tourist visa). If you have someone you trust regarding mechanics you may want to look at some second hand cars

Tourists cannot obtain finance.

Rent one that’s what I did there’s no options for dtv holders find a rental car service and just rent it long term expect to pay more but atleast you’ll have a car

I'm pretty sure you need a Thai Work Permit to get Thai financing for a car. Good luck though

Why would you want to finance a car. A car is something you should pay with cash. If you don’t have enough money then buy a cheaper one.

And exactly that is why Thai don't have money to pay some essential things, they have to pay for the car every month.

One option is to lease the car in the name of your Thai (girl)friend (if you have one and they are trustworthy enough :) )

Buy cash or don’t buy. And buy second hand preferably, you’ll lose less than on a new car and you’ll easily find a dealer that will sell you a car.

dont understand why so many choose to waste tons of money by buying new. You get the same thing half price.. its 10% used.

Bought a cheap car in cash under 5000$ 2015 ford ranger low mileage it’s unlikely you’ll get a loan but you can always keep trying an alternative if you otherwise have great credit get a personal loan in your home country

You can't even open a bank account on a DTV, how on earth would you expect to get finance on a car

yup, just THB 500k for a brand new Yaris ATIV, same as amount for DTV, which isn't a lot

The Dtv costs 10,000THB, not 500,000. Even at 500k for a new car, or a newer model Hilux in good condition, it's still a good price. A good 15-25% lower than the states.

If you don’t have work permit then you can’t get the loan. The foreigner can only buy the car in full cash or transfer to the seller’s bank account. I bought my car by cash.

I had a friend who successfully got a car loan an an ED visa when everyone else said it was not possible. His advice: keep going to car dealers and begging them to help you with financing. Get used to being rejected until someone says yes. If you have decent proof of funds and stability in Thailand, it is possible (but not likely).

DTV_Pag_Backer if you do find one the interest would be astronomical

That's not only for DTVs. Most of Non-immigrant visas do not qualify as well. The only one I know is the Non-B, with WP and proper income.

I have a Thai friend who owns quite a large garage. Even Thais have to pay in full and she does not do finance. She will not deal with foreigners either, cash or not. Too much hassle.

I believe it's almost impossible to do that on a DTV. The only way could be having a local doing it for you but I wouldn't recommend it. The safest way is to save enough to get a car in cash, no other ways around
