Hi everyone. I am relocating to Thailand from Canada in 6-8 months. I’m hoping to find some help regarding taxes with a DTV visa working for a Canadian company in Thailand. Any help is greatly appreciated 🙂

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the tax obligations and visa restrictions for Canadians moving to Thailand on a DTV (Digital Nomad Visa). Key points include that while you will pay taxes in Canada as you're employed by a Canadian company, spending over 180 days in Thailand may make you a tax resident there, with Thai income also assessable for tax. However, tax treaties between Canada and Thailand allow for credits on taxes paid. The DTV visa does not allow work for Thai companies, but you can work remotely for foreign clients. Additionally, obtaining health insurance is advisable.

As you work for a Canadian company you will continue to pay tax in Canada. If you spend 180 days or more in any calendar year inside Thailand you will also be a Thai tax resident, that means that any income you bring into Thailand is also assessable for Thai tax but as Canada has a tax treaty with Thailand you can claim a credit against Thai tax for any Canadian tax already paid on the money you bring in

Takiep74 You can work !! Just not a Thailand company or a job that a Thai citizen can do. Your money must come from a foreign source.

Takiep74 Has nothing to do w/ remote work. It's where your income comes from. You could own a foreign business, or retirement funds, or dividends, stocks, etc. It's simple = Your money must come from a foreign source.

✅ Your employer situation doesn’t change

If you’re already paying taxes where your employer is based (or where you’re tax-resident), that continues as-is.

• ✅ DTV requires proof of funds, typically showing the required amount sitting in your bank for ~3–4 months, depending on the embassy/consulate.

• ✅ DTV is not a Thai work visa, so Thailand is not taxing you by default just because you’re physically there.
