Hi,

I want to share the frustration of applying for a Thai tourist visa in Shanghai. My wife plan to travel to Thailand and they have Imposed a new requirement, a guarantee letter for those who are not working like her. The individual need to get the guarantee letter from either the local police station or from your own consulate, both options simply not realistic and they are not in the position to guarantee that a person will travel and return on the declared dates (air tickets already purchased). We are at the consulate for 3rd consecutive day today, trying to apply again in what it seems to be mission impossible....

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user expressed frustration over the new tourist visa application process for Thailand in Shanghai, particularly regarding the requirement for a guarantee letter for non-working applicants. The letter must be obtained from a local police station or consulate, which the user finds impractical. They are experiencing difficulties after multiple days at the consulate. Comments on the post discuss the overall challenges faced by tourists and the differing treatment of nationalities in the visa process.

I am not affected by all this, but it seems from all the posts that Thailand is doing all it can to frustrate tourists.Exceptions are Russians and Chinese for whom they seem to lean backwards to accommodate them (with the latter having a lot of them jumping ship in Thailand)

Thailand simply doesn't want influx of mass Chinese immigrants like it, unfortunately, happened once. But short stay tourists are welcome here anyway.

It's substantially harder for Chinese, yes. They have to get a visa, while we get free entry, and if they get this on arrival they get only 15 days (can't be extended) while we get 30 (can be extended to 60). And they have to go all they way back to China to get another visa, they can't just get one in Laos like we can.

It's basically impossible for a Chinese person to stay here for, say, a year, on tourist entries, doing border bounces and visa runs, while this is trivial for Westerners- at least for the first year. It's only easy for them to come for 15 days and then go home.

It is substantially easier for a Westerner to get tourist access to Thailand than it is for Chinese so really no idea where you are getting this from.

what is the nationality of your wife? The thai consulates in China are not the most user friendly

She is Mexican, in the end the Consulate just made it difficult and we lost the air tickets. We saw a lot of people going back like us for 2nd, 3rd time...
