What are the long-term visa options for a dual citizen planning to stay in Thailand?

I’m under 50 and planning to stay in Thailand long-term. I hold dual citizenship and have entered using different passports—once on one, then twice more on the other for visa runs. During my most recent (third) entry using the same passport, immigration questioned me about my previous 58-day stay and discovered I’m a dual citizen. Fortunately, I had an outbound ticket and was allowed to enter.

However, I’m now concerned about what might happen the next time I return, and I’m looking for a legal, long-term visa option. Ideally, I’d like something cost-effective, as I don’t want to spend a lot just to maintain a visa.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A dual citizen under 50 looking for a legal long-term visa in Thailand expressed concerns about their past entry on multiple passports and is seeking cost-effective visa options. Responses suggest considering the DTV visa for a 5-year multi-entry stay, especially given recent crackdowns on tourist visa runs. The ED visa is also recommended for a one-year stay with renewals. It’s advised to avoid risky behaviors that could lead to entry denial and to consult agents for smoother immigration processes.

The Immigration have both your fingerprints and you face picture, and will use facerecognition from cctv, so using different passports will not help you to stay longer, than the rules allow anybody else.

Depends on the officer how he woke up that day.

And that's what happens when you try and cheat the Thai system.

Do the correct visa and that way you'll be legally here and not constantly worried about looking over your shoulder.

I don’t think using your Cambodian passport is the answer

You're flagged in the system and each time you enter now without a visa or even with a short-term visa your chance of denial increase 10 fold. I suggest looking at a more long-term visas before returning such as the DTV

I see, thanks. My preference would be to apply for a single-entry tourist visa, return to Thailand for about 40 days, and then apply for the DTV. But as you mentioned, that seems riskier than going directly for the DTV.

no problem, there is another route you can take if you are determined to come by visa exempt or tourist visa before applying for the DTV. You can contact an agent such as
@THAI *****************************
(they run this group) and pay for them to pre-check you with immigration and get you through immigration control without issues.

just go direct for the DTV. Even with an SETV you could be pulled out of line, questioned and then denied entry. Its upto you what you do, but personally I wouldn't risk it as a visa doesn't guarantee you entry, it only increases your chances of being allowed to enter

All Thai visas are dirt cheap. And you were absolutely silly to enter the same country on different passports. Now you have shone the beacon on your own head. Foolish. Look at the DTV visa. And be smart about which passport you use to apply

Your flagged now. Make sure your 100% sorted

Haha, I get that a lot. I’m not too fixed on national identity — just looking for places that align with my values and way of life. Thailand feels like a good fit. What kind of lifestyle are you planning to have in Thailand? I am planning to stay in Chiangmai at this stage.

I see, thanks. I currently have two options. My preferred plan is to apply for a single-entry tourist visa and return to Thailand one more time. I would stay for about 40 days and will have an outbound air ticket as well. After that, I plan to leave and apply for DTV. Would I be likely to face any issues re-entering Thailand on a tourist visa under this plan?

Alternatively, I could leave this time and apply directly for the DTV visa, but that’s not my preferred option due to personal circumstances.

Why the Tourist Visa which will risk being denied entry before the DTV?
Jeremy ********
Do an Ed visa…you can get 1 year at tine with a renewal every 90 days at Thai immigration

Just make sure you go to your classes

Or try for the DTV visa

its a personal choice which one to do just make sure you have met the requirements for DTV meaning the money in savings for a few months. DTV must be applied for outside thailand.

@Cary ***
If you actually got a proper tourist visa (not exempt) you're unlikely to get any trouble. Having said that, yes- your long term solution is DTV. But if you're already applying for tourist visa why not just apply for DTV?

@Nitzan ****
changes made makes DTV pointless now its going away

@Andrew *******
Not aware of any changes. Can you point me at the news?

@Andrew *******
they aren’t ’cracking down’ on anything. It’s just the proliferation of internet thailand newbies thinks every rejection is a new ‘crackdown’ lol
Andrew ********
@Todd ********
then why do i see videos on tiktok where people who been doing border runs are being stopped more often lol even posts here
Todd *********
@Andrew *******
for the exact reason I just explained. The internet. And newbies to Thailand with no idea how it works. Always been the same. And the reason many join sites like this is because they fucked up or don’t understand how the visa system works here.

Thailand gets about 40 million tourists a year. If you see 10 million similar posts, they are cracking down. If you see 15… go back to bed and don’t soil yourself

who really knows how it works? From what I can see, policies shift frequently, and in practice, border control can be relaxed or tightened depending on changing government priorities. A solution that works at one time may not work at another—it all seems contingent and unpredictable. And the truth is, we’re all growing every day, learning from our mistakes. No one is perfect, and no one has all the answers.
Todd *********
@Cary ***
what have you seen ‘shifting frequently’? ALL nations make changes to their immigration plan annually. It’s a fast changing world.

The price of Thai visas has astoundingly remained the same for many years. The criteria also. Of course it evolves, but the basics haven’t changed in decades. LTR and DTV are quite new. Seriously positive changes. At insanely low cost.

And there are well known ‘work arounds’. Border bounce agencies, agents to facilitate visa. Fast track airport arrival. Some border points are well known to be strict, others are well known for being soft. You just have to gently read and learn here. And talk to people with similar circumstances

@Todd ********
Thanks. I’m doing exactly what you suggested—learning from here and asking to good people who might have insight. Do you happen to know any reliable border bounce agencies or agents who can assist with Thai visa runs or fast-track arrival services?
Todd *********
@Cary ***
that totally depends where you are starting from. In your local area, there will absolutely be agencies with excellent reputations. And agencies won’t take you if they can’t guarantee you can come back.

For an agent, you can just ask the owners of this page
@THAI *****************************
. Send them any questions by line or messenger

The DTV will give you a 5-year multi entry stay. METV - 6 month multi entry which can give you around 9 months with the right timed extensions

It seems best to get the DTV and return and makes better financial sense. If you do enter on a SETV make sure you have a ticket of departure, 20,000THB cash/currency equivalent and accommodation booked.

@Cary ***
there's not a huge difference between visa exempt and a tourist visa. Get the DTV before you come as you're planning to get it anyway
