A new rail connection is set to bring Bangkok and Ayutthaya closer, with SRT Bangkok Connex launching daily air-conditioned commuter services from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal on August 1.

Refurbished Japanese KIHA 40/48 trains will serve weekday commuters and weekend visitors, with schedules tailored to work journeys and historical sightseeing trips.

Promotional fares will start at 30 baht and reach a maximum of 50 baht during the first three months, running until October 31.

I did it last January and the paper work is a bit more complicated and you require 2 copies of everything instead of just 1 copy for a retirement extendion .

Also you are placed on a 1 month underconsideration stamp to allow all the checks of your application and a home visit from Immigration to be completed .

The only real benifits are
*****
0 to be seasoned instead of
*****
0 , but it can be withdrawn immediately your passport recieves your extension stamp as long as its back in 2 months before renewal .

You can also apply for a work permit it without leaving the country if you get a job here , with a retirement extension you cant .

I can't see any benefits of changing from retirement visa to marriage visa. At the end of the day 400,000 baht isn't a lot of "extra" money to have in the bank. What am I missing? Now, if the marriage visa came without the 90 day reporting that would be worth it

I was going to but met some related issues. But then it was pointed out that if your spouse dies before you, which of course is possible, then your marriage visa stops immediately. On top of her death you have all that to deal with.

I,m sticking to retirement when l return from an extended home visit

Personally, I wouldn't do it. More paperwork, more hassles, no benefits. My missus got talked into it unfortunately.

Paul Kain . .you cannot change from a 90-days Non-O retirement visa to a 90-days Non-O marriage visa. You can only change the REASON of a 1-year Extension of Stay Based on Retirement, to the REASON for a 1-year Extension of Stay Based on Being Married to a Thai Wife. You can do it as soon as the one-year extension is nearing its expiry date, and when it is up from 30 days from the expiry. You will need to fulfill the financial requirements (either 400,000 THB in your Thai bank account since 2 months, or income affidavit proof of 40,000 THB monthly, or a 12-months bank statement over consecutive monthly transfers from abroad of a minimum of 40,000 THB) You are NOT changing any visa. You are changing the reason for the extension. The extension of stay is NOT a visa . . . . . . . . . . . All that wrong wording is absolutely annoying. You and all those other posers in this group should learn the difference between a stay permit and a visa

The only downside is the house visit. You have to wait for them to call you and tell you when they are coming out and making sure you have a witness who can wait with you for them to show up. Sometimes half a day. You also have to have 2 full sets of the required documents including the photos.

Steve Hamstad We asked kindly for them to call a day in advance so my husband, who works 45 minute drive away, wouldn't have to just walk out on his work mid-day without warning.

And so that we could give our witness a heads up the day before as well.

That was fine. No problem at all.

You can't change from one visa to another. It's only possible if you are already on an extension of stay, if so when you go to apply for the next extension you can change the reason you apply for the extension

I dont understand why people think the paper work is difficult for marriage visa?? No stress ! 10 year old could do it! Only a few forms x 2 sets! Headaches?? Depends on your funds!!

@Michael ******
A few forms, go the Amphur office for the marriage cert. go the bank and then deal with the nice people at immigration. When i done the marriage extension all paper work was correct as requested. Then copies not good enough, demanded landlord come to immigration though they live in Europe. Refused the agent who had power of attorney. would not accept utility bills. Retirement was a breeze.

100% depends on the office. Chiang Mai was a breeze. Here in Koh Samui they requested a bunch more documents that weren't even their own list. Ones our landlord refused to give and even called immigration himself to complain. As a result my wife and I had to make extra trips to other government offices to get other documents they would accept. They also do a house visit every year for the first 5 years of applying at this office. To top it off they want not one, but two witnesses present. And they give virtually no notice which makes it a bit difficult.

Married visas are generally considered an enhancement but what any individual gets is based on circumstances entirely. For some people, it will be transparent excepting a minor financial upside.

Unless you plan to work, or the 800k baht thing is to much of a stress there is literally no benefit, except more paperwork and headaches for the marriage visa.

Your allowed to work (with a work permit) and its 2 months seasoning before your application.

The retirement ext visa is seasoning for 2 months prior the application, after the application you hold 800kthb for 3 months, then 400kthb for the rest of the year.
Jim *********

Colin Chaffers you aren’t allowed to work without a work permit, period. And there is no 12 month seasoning for a retirement extension. Two more before applying and three months after. But you only need half as much in your bank account for a marriage extension. And yes, at renewal time you can change reasons for the extension. But the retirement is a lot less paperwork.
Colin **********
Colin **********
Jim McGowan for retirement ext you need seasoning for 2 before your application. Then retain 800kthb for 3 months after. Then 400kthb for the rest of the year. Until you top it up to 800kthb for the next ext.

Marriage visa ext only requires 2 months seasoning (400kthb) prior to your application.

Colin Chaffers no you are not allowed to work on a marriage visa or marriage extension... I don't know where you got that idea ❓

Paul Anthony McDermott you can get a work permit to work on a marriage visa, you cannot with a retirement visa.
Wannikea *********

Paul Anthony McDermott while you can't necessarily work while just on the marriage visa/extension without a work permit. You most certainly can get a work permit and be eligible and legal to work.

Paul Anthony McDermott you can’t get a work permit with retirement visa, can with a marriage visa that is what is clearly stated

Wannikea Wanblee it's not a case of not necessarily..

A marriage visa doesn't infer work rights... You need a work permit..

A work permit may be applied for on any non immigrant visa barring retirement and student varieties, not just a marriage visa

No it doesnt make you legal to work..

Its a visa/extension class that allows you to apply for a work permit..

It's no different than a non imm B in that regards

The inference on that post is a marriage visa allows you to work... No it doesnt

Les Norton yes as a non immigrant visa a marriage visa or extension allowed you to apply for a work permit..

It doesn't give you the automatic right to work..

One can apply for a work permit on any no imm visa barring the retirement and student versions

You have answered you own comment "work permit" you need a work permit.. 👍

Again a marriage "visa" does not permit you to work.. 👍
