Answer summary
The conversation revolves around the changes in Thailand's visa exemption rules and the implications for tourists, particularly regarding extensions and re-entry. Participants discuss the new policies effective from September 15th, emphasizing that tourists who stay for long periods may face scrutiny and complications at immigration. They note that obtaining a tourist visa might be advisable for those intending to stay longer than the typical tourist duration to avoid issues with immigration officers. The dialogue highlights the importance of proper documentation and travel history when planning trips to Thailand.

Come in get your 60 plus 30 day extension then use a do visa run to Laos or Vietnam and pay a visa run company like friendly visa service I believe 10k baht and they guarantee reentry no matter how many stamps on your passport.

Understand it is not the plan of Thai government to stop you coming for 150 days. Visa exemption is supposed to be for genuine tourist short trip. If you come for 150 days they want you to apply for an appropriate visa. You very likely will not get two 30 day extensions so close to each other. Therefore before you come just apply for the 6 month multi entry tourist visa. If you have the appropriate visa for your plan you have nothing to worry about.

To answer your question, yes, you can extend a visa exempt for 30 days. My question to you would be, how many months in the last 12, have you spent in Thailand. If you answer 4 or more, I would think about getting an actual tourist visa. Just my opinion.

Sounds like you're trying to "live" in Thailand while pretending to be a tourist. Just apply for a visa 🤷‍♂️

RadiantC********
RadiantC********
Collywobble Thomason Plenty of flexibility but you need to plan things. You need proof of where you're staying the first night (to be entered on your TDAC). You may need a visa and/or onward flights. As has long been required. Drifting around with no plan - sorry but that's not proper tourism. I don't know what you do in your home country but most people under 65 work and can't just aimlessly float around SE Asia with no job and no plans doing nothing without a visa.

Collywobble Thomason if by restricted you mean you have to actually plan stuff correctly then yes. Then again, nothing has changed in that regards if you're actually a tourist and not trying to live somewhere whilst on a tourist visa or visa exemption.

Stephen **********
RadiantCamel1017 yes we agree. Some people were saying that 150 days didn't equal being a tourist and yet they have a tourist visa that lasts that long. So it's not that they aren't tourists. It's that if you're going to stay that long Thailands wants some extra background.
RadiantC********
RadiantC********
Stephen Lodewick Getting an METV means you're being vetted and thus anyone with that sort of itinerary- spending more than 3 months in Thailand for touristic purposes up to 6 or 9 months and traveling to neighboring countries in between visits should apply for that visa.
Stephen **********
Stephen **********
Mike Veldhuizen Yet Thailand offers a tourist visa good for 6 months with stays lasting 60 days at a time. So what he is describing fits Thailand's definition of a tourist - they just want people to pay for the opportunity instead of repeatedly using the free scheme which was intended for short term visitors.

Not unlikely that you will get only 7 days at the second extension.

And also possible that you get at least some questions when re-entering as this isn't the usual touristic behavior Thailand is used to and wants.

On the 14th you should get stamped in for 60 days visa exempt and can extend for a for a further 30. But the big question is, particularly for the 2nd visa exempt, is what history do you have of being in Thailand over the last 12 to 18 months. If you have history you may well have issues
ZanyMo*******
ZanyMo*******
@John *********
i generally travel most winters there from November to January, so nothing out the ordinary i believe
John **********
John **********
ZanyMoose1408 getting that 2nd visa exempt is not a given in that case. Make sure you have accommodation booked, a ticket out and 20k baht or equivalent in cash. Or apply for a visa during your time outside Thailand travelling.
Darren *******
Darren *******
ZanyMoose1408 if you were in Thailand for November to January just gone, and on visa exemption, then I would guess you'd get questioned under your proposed plans. Particularly with your plan to return so soon after maxing out the 60 days plus 30 day extension.

It does seem that the 15th will be the start date, so you'll probably be fine with the 14th. But getting a visa exempt and extension and then leaving and return makes you a prime candidate to be pulled out of line at immigration and interrogated about why you're back so soon after just spending 90 days in Thailand as a tourist. Immigration really doesn't like it when people max out their stay and then immediately return, especially when they're on visa exempt.

If you do get back in, there's a chance if you apply for a second visa exempt extension, you'll only receive 7 days. We're not sure if that policy will still be in place after the new entry rules take affect.

it has been hit or miss. Sometimes it happens to people and sometimes it doesn't. I haven't heard of anyone with an actual tourist visa having it happen, only visa exempt. And we don't know if that will continue now that new policies are being implemented on September 15th.

No one gets "pulled out" for a second visit. If his passport is full with stamps all over, he might have issues. But not for a "second trip" in 3 - 4 months.

you can think that if you want. I've seen enough people report exactly that happening, even people with METV if they maxxed out the first stay with 90 days.

Angelo Schneider there are no hard and fast rules when it's left up to the discretion of IO whether you're allowed in in or not.
Galenus ******
Galenus ******
Angelo Schneider and you don't know it either, just want to have the opinion leadership. So sad
Alan **********
Alan **********
Angelo Schneider The problem here is that neither "we" nor you know (all) the rules.

A basic understanding and common refrain, since late last year has been, upon staying 60+30, leaving and coming back in shortly thereafter, the IO would tell the traveler something like "OK, but next time get a proper visa". This, purportedly, to not allow foreigners to "live" in Thailand without getting the proper permission.

As well, the second extension would sometimes be for 7 days instead of the usual 30.

This has been told more than a few times around here and elsewhere since roughly last November, when rumors of the reduction to 30 days began.

So, with NO official word of how many times one may enter visa-exempt, at least by air, and how many total days one can be in Thailand as a "tourist", it kinda sorta stands to reason that the tightening of v-e entry and, likely(?) some other things, may follow.
Angelo ***********
Angelo ***********
@Brandon ***********
Has nothing to do with "maxed out". If an IO has issues: then there most likely is an issue.

And the people reporting here about: "oh my god, I got pulled out, and ..." usually never tell us what the real issue is.

So: we don't know it. There is basically never - absolutely never - any problem if you are in the rules.
