TLDR : Answer Summary
Users recommend several VPN services for accessing websites securely while in Thailand. Popular suggestions include NordVPN for its features like double VPN and obfuscated servers, ExpressVPN for its reliability, and ProtonVPN for privacy. A router configured with a VPN is also advised for long-term use. Some users have experienced issues with sites blocking VPNs, prompting suggestions for dedicated IP or residential proxies. General concerns revolve around accessing banking and government sites uninterrupted.

Could by your geolocation on browser giving it away. All vpns are not totally private..

NordVPN gets flagged by a lot of sites these days forcing you to CAPTCHA and other crap, look into TorGuard residential IP if you want a less stressful experience.

I use Cyberghost VPN and SecureLine VPN (that belongs to Avast, the antivirus company but can be bought as a standalone product). I don't use them out of privacy concerns, but rather for practical things (as content blocking by geolocation).

If you have problems with VPNs they check the time zone from the browser information so change the time zone to whatever time zone you claim to be in over VPN. Mullvad browser will block time zone information if you browse using that but sometimes they block logins because VPN IP’s WHOIS as a data center IP not residential or mobile. For a more advanced setup residential proxies are much better but the setup to use them is far greater than a done for you VPN client.

The US government already knows where you are, a VPN isn't going to hide you very much

Express is good, but, I will tell you if they want to really know they will know. Express vpn with their router is your best bet though. Retired IT guy

You can't go wrong with Proton, Nord or Surfshark.

The thing is - they sometimes fail, and if staying undetected is crucial for you, you might want to follow Brandon’s advice.

From my own experience: I used NordVPN, which has a “kill switch” feature that’s supposed to cut your internet connection if the VPN drops, to avoid even a small chance of your real location being exposed. But… it failed me 🤣

In my case, it wasn’t anything serious - I just got blocked from online banking and had to talk to support. But I learned my lesson 😅

To be fair to NordVPN, they apologised for the failure and refunded me without any hassle (though it was still within their 30-day money-back guarantee).

Now I’m with Proton, but I wouldn’t rely on it for anything super important, either.

exactly! This is why I need a good vpn, I don’t want the bank not allowing me to access, and crypto sites I use and other govt sites, it’s hard to get through and pay bills and things like that. It’s annoying

I'm lost with all of the comments. What is the problem with your bank knowing? Everyone knows I'm over here and have had no issues. I use Nord to access some apps to pay bills for the US. Other than that, I see no reason to hide.

lol it’s nothing more than that lol just being blocked from those sites specifically. It’s a pain lol

I use Express VPN. Works good

Nord VPN with dedicated IP

NordVPN for extra anonymity, all optional:

-Double VPN

-Onion over VPN

-Obfuscated servers (this hides that you’re using a VPN / scrambles VPN data)

-Dedicated IP possible

-Well known for being the fastest VPN out there

And many more options

Nordvpn works well. Some sites need the double / obfuscated mode.

Banks absolutely do not care. But get a SoFi account as it’s better for travel no fees at all. If you really need to be private then get a vpn router but you’ll want a 500mb plan at least 1g speed ideally as it’ll slow you down a lot.

there's a surprising number of institutions and websites that have regional blocks due to fraud, hackers, and DDOS attacks.

I can't check my credit score or pay my mortgage from Thailand without a VPN.

exactly!! this is why I want a good one! You understand my pain lol

likely because those sites are specific to your nation not intended to be used by non citizens so it’s a no brainer to deny connections from outside for them. Generally domain providers handle ddos protection as all of my sites and servers do. But it makes sense in this context for sure. Dedicated vpn router is the best bet for permanent solution..in USA some YouTube features are free that aren’t here.

I have VPN routers at my house and my brother's house for backup 😂

anyone you can suggest. I’ll install it at my moms

gl.inet have a very user friendly Wireguard server built into the router. You'll need to do port forwarding from your mom's router to the gl.inet router though.

I did use Express VPN but it's so expensive. Now I use Surfshark and it allows me to log into US sites no problem.
Brandon ************
Do you have a house or apartment in the US that you'll still have. Or a family member that lives in the US? The best VPN is getting a router that hosts a VPN server setup at your/their house and you connect to that. That way it looks like you're at their house and you'll never have to worry about being detected as a VPN from streaming services.

ProtonVPN, TotalVPN 100% works. Also I have a Wireguard VPN in my home sever and I can connect to it without issues from Thailand.

I use NordVPN and it’s seems to do the job. I have also heard friends using Surfshack without issue
