I was hoping to do some online bank stuff with a bank from back home. I use surfshark and my bank was not impressed. Do I need a higher grade vpn? Or to run two of them or? How do you guys deal with this stuff?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation discusses issues faced by expats regarding accessing their bank accounts while using a VPN from Thailand. Several users share their experiences with different VPNs, like Surfshark and NordVPN, and their effectiveness for online banking with UK and Dutch accounts. Many users confirm they do not require a VPN to access their accounts, while a few mention having to pause their VPN when using Thai banking apps. The general consensus suggests that informing your bank about your travel plans can alleviate access issues.
All anyone has to do is inform their bank that they're going abroad, including days you'll be out of your home country and tell them which country/s your going too. This applies, well in my case to transferring money.
I transferred money through Wise December 2023,from my UK bank account, to a Thai bank account that is a Thais account. I used my banking app., with Surfshark and no problem.
I think blocking access to your bank because you are abroad is denying access to your money. What happens if you are on holiday and need to do some banking? I can access all my uk banks from Thailand; no issues at all.
Google store links your location to Apps you wish to download now. If your Google location is Thailand, some overseas banking apps won't let you download them.
I have a bank bank in the uk and a number of savings accounts all can be accessed and managed without any VPN. So not sure which country you are from that needs a VPN?
I use a VPN on my mobile for mobile banking in the Netherlands whilst in Thailand. But I cannot use a VPN with my Thai bank account. If I login to my Thai account, it detects the use of a VPN. So, every time I want to use the mobile app, to check account or scan-to-pay, I have to pause my VPN.
I maintain a UK bank account as well as a Thai account, I also use surfshark, but do not need it for logging into my UK account, some other financial institutions such as "Legal and General" which I also use, does need it. Who or whatever you are logging into should not know that you are using a VPN, defeats the logic of using a VPN.
