TLDR : Answer Summary
A user married to a Thai national and living in Australia is seeking advice on visa options available for expats over 55 years old. Suggestions include applying for the Non-Immigrant O visa based on marriage, the Retirement Visa, and considering the option for a work permit if choosing the marriage visa.
NON-O RETIREMENT VISA RESOURCES / SERVICES
  • Go to the Retirement Visa Section for information on requirements, including age restrictions, financial requirements, and necessary documentation.
  • For immediate assistance, contact Thai Visa Centre directly via LINE at @ThaiVisaCentre or Email them.
  • Explore recent discussions by using the Non-O Retirement Visa tag in the search box at the top of the page.

Being 55 you also have an option for retirement visa. It is the most easiest to get.

Simplest way. Retirement Visa. (Extension of stay). Or marriage visa

Go to the Thai Embassy and apply for the Non Immigrant O visa based on marriage with Thai National.

Do you wish to live in Thailand?

This will also allow you to apply for a work permit whereas with a retirement visa, you cannot.

If "yes" then do as Robert recommended below and you'll be fine.

Are you legally married in Thailand?

Not sure if it helps but my previous marriage was happy and blissful when we were 6000 miles apart. We very rarely argued and got on well.
