TLDR : Answer Summary
An Australian and a New Zealander are seeking advice on the best visa for a 6-month stay in Thailand, wanting a simple and clear answer. A commenter recommended a 6-month multi-entry tourist visa as a suitable option.

6 months multi entry tourist visa

No, at most a METV can get you nearly 9 months, if you do your last re-entry on or near the valid-until date and extend a final 30. But you could then go to a Thai consulate in neighbouring country (Laos, Malaysia, etc.) and apply for a single entry tourist visa, which if approved would get you another 60 days plus 30 extension.

You must get in your country before you leave. Its not complicated to get, just check requirements on thai embassys web.
