What is the best visa option for a 6-month stay in Thailand for a French expat?

Hello, I’m 36yo, French, currently living in Spain.

I went to Thailand for the first time in January on an exemption visa for 30 days.

I’d like to go back to Thailand in October and if possible stay for 6 months.

I am a bit confused as to what would be my best option here :

- I have another 30 days of visa exemption, should I simply go with that, then request a 60 days tourist visa after that + an extension of 30 days ? That would make 4 months, but then the visa exemption would renew for 2025 ? (Pretty sure this option is not correct 😂)

- or ask for a Student Visa (Learning Thai online with a local school) ? That would allow me 60 days + 30 days extension and that student can then be renewed for 60 days again and another extension ?

Thanks 💚

TLDR : Answer Summary
A French citizen, currently living in Spain, seeks advice on the best visa option to stay in Thailand for 6 months. Options discussed include using a 30-day visa exemption followed by a 60-day tourist visa and a possible extension, or applying for a student visa for Thai language classes. Responses suggest that a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) from France is a better choice, allowing multiple 60-day entries and extensions, providing the necessary duration of stay with less hassle than the education visa.

METV

I do not fully understand the logic of doing exemption first, but not extend, then getting a tourist visa and extension. If you want exemption you may also want to extend it for another 30 days.

You may be better off with two single entry tourist visas though. Each can be maxed to 90 days, yielding the 6 months you aimed for. You need just one trip abroad.

Or work with exemptions, then it's 3 x (30 + 30). So an extra trip abroad and an extra extension, but two less visas.

The multiple entry tourist visa is an option too but not strictly necessary as your nationality qualifies for exemption. It can be used to squeeze 9 months stay out of but if you need only 6 I see no real advantage of an METV. And it's not so cost effective.

Forget the idea of online education visa. You need to attend school not study online as you can do online from home.

Technically flying in you have more than one 30 day exempt entry and extension. You can fly in as often as you want until an imo stops you

Dodgy ones yeh don't care and thats why immigration have got harder on ed visa

To spend my winters in Thailand, I used to get 3 each 60 day visas, resulting in me making 2 visa runs to the Cambodia border. Bit of a pain in the ass but it worked out OK

@Frazer *****
the embassies in the are have started clamping down on this. Most now only allow 1 tourist visa in a rolling 365 days.

That was from 2010 till 2017. Things do change

Why don’t you apply for a Non O visa before you leave? (I guess you’re passed 50 years😉)

Will be in the future. As we come now for only 90 days we just get a Tourist Visa and the 30 day extension. Plan to move here in 2025 on a Retirement Visa

If you're trying to go for 6 months then I wouldn't bother trying to use an education visa.

Easiest would be applying for a multiple entry tourist visa from your home country's thai embassy (most likely through the evisa website) before you travel to Thailand. This visa is valid for 6 months from the day it's issued by the embassy and while this visa is valid, you'll receive a 60 day tourist entry stamp every time you enter Thailand. You can also apply for a 30 day extension once per entry.

So apply for visa, arrive and get 60 days and apply for extension (90 days total) then go to a neighboring country to explore SE Asia a bit and when you return you'll get another 60 day stamp and can apply for another 30 day extension (90 days total). Now you've gotten your 6 months.

One question that I cannot seem to find solid info on. On that 6 month METV, does it matter if the crossing into another country is by land or by flight? Any difference? Plus exactly how long is one required to stay out of Thailand to gain that new 60 day stamp upon re-entry? Thank you!

@Ron *******
there's no difference between land and air. No minimum time out of the country. You can leave and return same day.

Thank you kindly for the valuable info!

If you apply for a six months Multiple Entries Tourist Visa (METV) you can well planned get up to 9 months in Thailand. But if you’re a french citizen you need to apply from France, ore else you’ll just get a single entry 60+30 days.

Not quite sure how it works for Euro countries. The rule for the METV is you must apply from your home country or country of legal residence. Technically Euro citizens can legally reside in other Euro countries.

Perhaps someone with direct experience could confirm whether the OP could indeed apply via the Spain embassy.
