Hello everyone!

I’m currently in Bangkok on a Tourist Visa (TR) with a single entry, which expires on December 9th. I’m planning to apply for a 30-day visa extension and was wondering about the best place to apply.

I’ve heard that the process in Bangkok is smooth and straightforward. However, I’m leaving Bangkok on December 1st and will be in Chiang Mai around the time I plan to submit my application (likely December 2nd or 3rd). I’ve also read mixed reviews about the Chiang Mai immigration office, with some people mentioning delays or even rejections.

I’d love to hear your experiences or advice on extending a Tourist Visa at these locations (or others in Thailand). Specifically:

1. Is the process easier or quicker in Bangkok vs. Chiang Mai?

2. Any tips for ensuring a successful extension?

I appreciate any insights you can share!

Thank you in advance. 🙏

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is currently in Bangkok on a Tourist Visa set to expire on December 9th and plans to apply for a 30-day extension while in Chiang Mai around December 2nd or 3rd. They seek advice on whether to extend their visa in Bangkok or Chiang Mai, and for tips to ensure a successful extension. Comments suggest that application processes at both locations are similar, but Chiang Mai may be less busy, which could result in quicker processing times. It's important to have the necessary documentation, including the TM30 form, regardless of where they decide to apply.

We don't do those "what are your experiences" posts but I'll let this on to give you answers 😛 🙂

You can apply for an extension at the immigration offices in Bangkok (or Chiang Mai) when you have 45 days or less left on your entry stamp.

There is no up side to waiting as they add the 30 days to the expiration date you have now.

I'd say there is no difference between the two as far as the process,

you need a TM30 to get a 30 day extension on a TR60 entry stamp at Section J in Chaengwattana immigrations

AND

You need a TM30 to get a 30 day extension on a TR60 entry stamp at either the main immigration office OR Central Festival Mall in Chiang Mai.

About the only difference is Chaengwattana is busier than Chiang Mai by about a factor of 10 or more on ANY day you go there,

Where as you could probably skate into Central Festival with the copies, form, photo, TM30 and get the extension pretty fast

You have to decide what office you're going to go to.

This is the documentation you are likely to be asked for at either location
