My 180 days end late March and I'm planning ahead. I'd love real experiences from the last 6 months:

1. Where did you go? (Singapore, KL, Penang, land border, other)

2. Route and total cost? (flight/ferry/bus + nights)

3. How many nights did you stay out?

4. Any questions or trouble at re-entry? Which checkpoint?

5. Did anyone try the 180-day extension at Samui immigration instead? Approved or refused, and what documents did they ask for?

Bonus: a cheap, decent hotel or area you'd recommend at the destination.

You want a truly memorable safe experience. Go to Chang Khong in Northern Thailand. Cross the border into Laos, and about half a block down to the right after you cross is the ticket office for the two day Slow boat down the Mekong River to LuangPraBong in the middle of Laos. Spent a few days there, then catch the high speed train down to VangVien. Spend a few days there, then back on the train to Vientiane Laos, and after a day there, cross back into Thailand at Nong Khai. To do it right give yourself 10 days in Laos. The whole trip, including everything, should be about US$50 a day, but well worth the trip. I have done the boat trip 3 times, and been to LuangPraBong 8 times.

Krabi Airport to KL.. ultra cheap, 1 hour flight.. super simple immigration, zero lines. Stay in Krabi night before, and ya get back around noon, can make the ferry’s back to Samui.

Ranong would be the quickest if you just planed a border bounce, it's a decent drive from Surat too, great scenery along the way.
