Hello group, just got back from getting my non-o multi entry for Thai marriage in Savanakhet. I Did airasia fly and ride from bangkok to Nakhon panom then Mukdahan arriving 9:30pm. I stayed at hotel MUQ which was very nice and clean right at the bus station. In the morning around 8:30am I headed to the border, left same day my visa expires no problems

50 baht for the bus ticket across the border

1,800 baht for the visa on arrival to Laos plus one photo needed

200 baht taxi to Thai embassy by 10:15.

Paperwork required:

Visa application and 2 photos

Copy of my passport main page and the Laos visa page(signed)

Copy of wife’s housebook and ID card front and back( both signed by her)

Copy of wife’s passport(not signed by accident but I I told the guy right away I forgot and he said it didn’t matter)

Copy of marriage certificate and the original to just show them (not signed)

5000baht in and out in less than 5 minutes.

Next day checked out of Avalon 2 Hotel (perfectly fine for 450baht and walking distance to embassy)

Sat at the new macchiato hotel cafe right across from embassy until 2pm, only about 10 people in line, got my passport and 200baht taxi back across the border by 15:30. 100baht to pay the immigration officer in Laos (?) and 55baht for the bus back over the river. Another 200 for the tuk tuk to Mukdahan for the fly and ride at 17:00 no problems.

Thanks for everyone’s advice on my previous posts to figure this out, I honestly can’t imagine ever bothering with the 1 year extension in country now that I can just do this over and over, it was too easy and it’s nice to get back into travel mode after the last few years.

How did you manage to book fly and ride?

the consulate was not crowded on the second day?

I don't understand why you need to go all that way. I do my annual renewal in Bkok for 1900. Why the flights, hotels,visas,taxis etc?

You can drive there, which is what I do. It's Savannakhet, which is right next to the Thai border. Moreover a lot of expats live in Isarn. It's closer for them to visit Savannakhet then to go to Bangkok for instance.

because I’m not old and sedentary and like to see places. I have the money in the bank as we speak but I didn’t move half way around the world to sit on my ass and not have new experiences. Also 400k sitting in a Thai bank for 2 months each year is a horrible financial strategy. And for me going to Chiang mai immigration office for extensions is worse than going to the dentist

@Alex ****
I guess each to their own. I live in Bkk so I guess its handy for me, and quick. I use the time and money to other stuff. Just arrived in Phnom Penh today, after spending some time in Hanoi, Hue, Hoian,Saigon,Can Tho and Chau Doc. Will visit Siem Reap for a few days before returning to Bkk. But I am old though so I make a timed appointment at Chaeng Wattana and once a year I am in and out in about 2 hours. May then pop into Central somwhere with my wife for a spot of lunch. Easy peasy!

Very good perspective and yes I thought about getting this visa in the Netherlands as it’s so much easier than the in country Marriage visa. But although I am married I chose and got the LTR.

Thanks for sharing!

A couple of questions: 1) wife's Thai passport copy - while I usually bring that along, I don't think it's an official requirement? 2) "Taxi back across the border " as far as I'm aware there are no cross border taxis, so you must be referring to a ride to the Lao side of the border then the bus back across.

My recommendation would be to take the bus from the bus station in Savannakhet as you'll save money and it's more convenient as this same bus goes all the way to the Mukdahan bus station and runs something like 8 times a day in each direction. From the Mukdahan bus station, you can continue your journey to other points across Isarn and the rest of Thailand without worrying about getting to the bus station from the border once you've crossed.

I always cross by car, but last time I went for my visa in Savannakhet, I gave a ride to someone who also applied for her marriage visa at the consulate, making sure she gets the bus to Mukdahan, so I dropped her at the station and accompanied her to buy a ticket. She would then switch to a bus to Bangkok and after spending a few days there she flew back down to Krabi where she lives.

@Alex ****
I see. Well the bus takes about as long as a bus normally takes, it usually comes to the same thing. That said, it could be a bit faster to just get a ride to the border than waiting for the bus to depart.

If you don't use the cross border bus, is there a shuttle bus to take people across the bridge like at Nong Khai? I only ever saw the Mukdahan-Savannakhet bus crossing the bridge so I assumed anyone without their own car would have to wait for the bus to come, though that could mean an hours wait.

they do the non o single entry as well???
Paul *******
They do, but you might as well get the multiple entry one even if you intend to get an extension at immigration. Gives you more time to season funds and peace of mind.
Steve *******
@Kris *******
Yes. 2000bt.
Kris ********
@Steve ******
the one year extension you have to go to Laos again or you can do it in your local immigration office?
Graham ******
@Kris *******
This is not an extension (which has financial requirements and is done locally ) but a new Visa each year with no banked finances
Steve *******
@Graham *****
Kris was asking about the single entry Non Imm O which is also available at Savannakhet and needed before you can get the 1 year extention of stay.
Kris ********
Steve *******
@Kris *******
You do the 1 year extention at you local Immigration Office.
James *********
Congratulations on the smooth ride.
Steve *******
You can get nearly 1 year and 5 months out of that visa, leave and re-enter the day it expires and then the 60 days visit Thai dependants extention.
Will ************
Just got to remember to leave and re enter every 90 days
Hilary ********
😊
Paul *******
*60 day
Paul *******
You can get a 60 visit wife extension on every entry, so that gives you 5 months without leaving.
Graham ******
@Will ***********
yes, this visa is a 12m multi-entry with 90 days per entry
Wayne *******
@Will ***********
oh really? If you get visa in another country you have to leave n re-enter every 90 days? Not just report?
Will ************
@Wayne ******
that’s the rules
Wayne *******
@Will ***********

Wayne *******
