Hope this can fit under "everything else". Seeking advice for selling via installments. I have posted my motorbike for selling on the marketplace, and today somebody approached me and asked if I accepted payment via installments. 4000 baht upfront, and the rest via weekly payments. Would you recommend this or he can just take the bike and disappear? Thanks!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The majority of responses advise against accepting payment in installments for selling a motorbike in Thailand. Concerns center around the high likelihood of non-payment or the buyer disappearing after taking possession of the bike. Many commenters suggest that selling outright for cash is a safer option, emphasizing trust issues associated with installment agreements. Some respondents mention the importance of holding onto the motorcycle until full payment is received, while a few suggest possible strategies, like requiring a security deposit, but these too were met with skepticism. Overall, the consensus leans strongly against installment payment plans.

Not a problem...tell him to come back for the bike once he's paid the final installment

I wouldn't do I in my home country where I am language fluent and know who to go to if necessary, why tf would you even consider doing it here in Thailand. Rhetorical question.
Judy **********
Don't do it. You'll be chasing payments. The buyer may be legit, but could also be transient and take off leaving you empty-handed.

Where money is concerned, trust nobody, nowadays you simply cannot. There is an old saying "a fool and their money are easily parted"

No problem with instalments. I do it often.

100% deposit and nothing further to pay. 🙂

He will probably hide the bike at a friends house, and tell you it was stolen so he won’t be paying any more because he hasn’t got the bike!
Carlos *********
If you keep the greenbook til its paid, but I wouldn't mess with this. If he hasn't got money, why is he in thailand? Find a proper buyer

I see. If you do it, get it all in writing. But someone should be able to buy it outright. Good luck with it
Wayne *****
You a brave man with you go with that buddy.
Leo ******
You'll accept it under contract and you keep the bike until they've made the last payment.. If they fault on the payments once then you keep the bike and the moneys paid... See how keen they are on the sale then

Why would you dance in the trust realm? Australia is a high trust society so it could work there but not here, no.
Jon *****
@Mma ******
I wouldn't do that in Australia neither

Would you lend a few thousand to a stranger, and let him ride your bike away with no security?
Andy **********
Not sure if advice has to be Thailand specific. Would you do this in your home country?
Baz ******
Keep the bike until you have the final payment, if not, you won't see all the money (even with family)

4000 up front. And after he’s made all the payments, paid in full, then he gets the bike. It’s called layaway.

Tell him: "Sure, borrow the money for my bike from your friend and then pay them off by installments".
Kool *******
Only take installments if they put up the full amount as security deposit guaranteeing they will pay you on time.

Big issues should the bike have mechanical issues during the installments m

@Robert **********

Do it only if you never wanna see your money again. I’ll give you 5000 today and I’ll promise you 5000 every week.

Stay well clear of persons wanting to pay by installments. The chances of you receiving all of the money is slim.
