I am selling items on Facebook marketplace. A lot of people have been wanting to transfer money to my bank account and have a 3rd party company like grab pick it up. Is this safe? Can they dispute charges? I just want want to get scammed so I have been telling people to pay in cash but the bigger more expensive items like 85 inch TV will probably have to be by bank transfer.

In America we have PayPal and Venmo but over there I hear that charges can be disputed and people can literally buy something from you and get their money back by saying it's fraud.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the safety of accepting bank transfers for selling items on Facebook Marketplace in Thailand, especially regarding larger items like TVs. Many participants affirm that bank transfers are generally safe, and once the money is in the seller's account, disputes are unlikely. It's advised to verify the receipt of funds before handing over items and to take measures like obtaining identification from any third parties involved in the pickup. Overall, while PayPal is noted for facilitating charge disputes that can favor buyers, direct bank transfers are seen as a more secure option for the seller.

I'm Thai and i can confirm that that how all the locals do it here. pretty normal. we develop a sense of trust that the buyers transfer first then send grab to pick items up.

It's one of the many nice things about Thailand.

I did this. I was selling a few things. Dude sent me (transferred to BKK bank) the cash and sent a grab driver to pick up the item. Worked perfectly.

Make sure the money fully arrive your account before sending out the goods

I guess transfers are very difficult to reverse. I have looked into it in the past and it wasn't worth the hassle for a small amount.

Bank transfer is pretty safe, better than PayPal imo

In thailand the buyer side has more risky when transfer the money to seller. Cause they cannot dispute or do anything after money transfered. For big item suggest to meet in person checking and transfer on the site.

let them transfer, then get photo of hand over to 3rd party and photo of ID of 3rd party

@Shane ******
exact .

I had a lot of them , 1month After receive item they Ask for money back

PayPal give open Doors to scammers why eBay stop with that .
Shane *******
Whatever you do, DO NOT accept PayPal and allow the customer to collect in person. One of the easiest scams going, they simply claim the item was never delivered and when you can't prove postage you lose the claim

I've had PayPal since 2005. But as you know with PayPal it's very easy to dispute charges and get a refund. I'm just worried about someone taking the item and disputing the charge.

I did not know that.

Most of the time it's safe. If they transfer to you it's really difficult to dispute charges.

@Bruce ********
that's common way of doing it here. It's perfectly safe, I've done it a few times myself as both seller and buyer.

Most transactions happen that way now.

I feel better about that. I had a few times where they were willing to pay for the product without meeting me and then sending a grab driver to pick it up. I said no because I assumed they could just dispute the charge after the product was taken
