Answer summary
The Thai government is reportedly moving forward with a proposal to reduce the visa-free stay from 60 days to 30 days for 93 nationalities due to concerns of abuse. However, there is skepticism in the community regarding the implementation of this change, with many commenters advising patience until an official announcement is made. Some expats express their intent to relocate to neighboring countries like Vietnam or Malaysia if the reduction takes place, while others argue that it could help filter out low-quality tourists. The conversation reflects diverse opinions on Thailand's visa policies and their implications for the expat community.

This current Prime Minister, ultimately was one of the persons who, as Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister, signed the Interior Ministry Notice promulgating the current free Visa Exemption for 60 Days ( ผ.60–ม.17 ) on 15 July 2024

Since 19 September 2025, as Prime Minister and Interior Minister, he has had many opportunities and time to easily arrange for his Thai Cabinet to pass for him to sign for any changes to current ผ.60–ม.17 free Visa Exemption scheme, but, so far, has not not made any changes nor has tabled any possible options for the Thai Cabinet to consider

The most optimal opportunities were before the General Election campaigning, but, had not done so

So, it will be seen if any changes to the ผ.60–ม.17 free Visa Exemption scheme will happen and, would need to be scheduled in an Agenda of a Thai Cabinet Meeting first

I read some comments here, and I find this is really good move for Thailand. This can really filter low quality foreigners. I saw many foreigners here saying good bye Thailand and going to vietnam or Malaysia. This means good for Thailand. True or real high quality foreigners do not mind of this change and they get a visa for this. It is also good for retirees living in Thailand. many rubbish foreigners will be reduced. 😆

Thailand is probably the only country in the world that got a lot of free time to;

A. replace their Prime Ministers so often, that make the sudden death/departure of the main actors/actress Game of Thrones S01-16 is nothing in comparison.

B. Tinkering their own VISAS policy every now and then, like they play a Monopoly board game.

FamilyPacker plus; banks easily block 'random' accounts for no appearant reason just because their own government once let all sort of notorious scammers roamed free everywhere in Thailand. Now every living foreigners who hold valid bank account, must feel the suffer trying to unblock their bank account.

the practically optimal way to reduce stupid foreign tourists and criminal gangs is to put the high entry fees. I think more than
*****
THB per entry. Stupid foreigners and trouble makers are usually poor, that is why they are easily falling into criminals and illegalities. The truth is, real rich people never want to make problems at all. why? They have enough money to spend and enjoy. And they have also great future. Why do they make problems? That is like suicide for them. why they involve in illegal business? they have already enough money! no reason to risk on their life. Always, foreigners who are poor or short of money can get easily into criminals and problems. Because they have no bright future, nothing to lose. Also, Thailand does not want low budget or poor foreigners. They are mostly trouble makers. the practical way to reduce them is only higher entry fee or tourism tax. At least, 20,000 THB but much higher is recommended. As mentioned, rich people or good budget foreigners do not care much about that higher fees.

It really dose not matter as now Vietnam Cambodia Philippines are becoming a much more welcoming country for westerners to visit and live

Thailand will be overwhelmed by Indians soon they are already creating slum areas in Thailand

Mike Cobby PI is a trashy corrupt country. Vietnam and Cambodia have limited infrastructure. Thailand has and will continue to be the place to be. Just get the proper Visa and be financially well seasoned. I love Thailand!

Amazing! I’m a long-term "traveler" - I work hard in EU during the summer and then spend the winter months on vacations in "tropical" countries . After three winters in Thailand, spending around 100.000 THB per months for local business, it looks like I’ll be heading to Vietnam to enjoy my winter vacations next season!

Oliver Martin Allright... see ya. Are you expecting us to beg you to return? There will be several retirees coming with far deeper spending for the entire year to replace you.

Oliver Martin 100,000 THB per month is never a big amount as a tourist. 😂😂😂😂Just wondering that you think you spent so much money for Thailand????

Young I’m not your typical tourist; I prefer settling in for a few months at a time. I’m currently renting a condo for 35,000 THB a month and just living a regular life while exploring. Honestly, having 100,000 THB to spend monthly in Thailand goes a long way by local standards.

OP
Oliver Martin So, you can't afford €30 for a 60 day tourist visa..extendable to 90 days?
Oliver ********

Freddie Percival I stay 5 months. Two months, extend, travel to some country for two weeks, back to Thai and another two months, then back to EU. And looks like will be inpossible to do that if they will give just 30 days on arrival. And I know many people from EU who works summer season there and spend winter in Thai and other countries. I was before years in Bali, but due the rain in the winter and too many "influencers" I came to Tha.

Young Honestly, I’m not really looking into the DTV right now. My life and business are still firmly rooted in the EU, and I’m not planning to live in Thailand permanently. I enjoy jumping between different countries too much to commit to a long-term visa here just yet.

Freddie Percival There’s no guarantee they’ll let me back in after a quick trip abroad. I’ve already spent the last few winters here, so I'm a bit worried about the history on my passport.

Oliver Martin why dont you get DTV? for you, DTV looks perfect.

OP
Oliver Martin Well, if it changes, you could still arrive on a 60 day Tourist Visa (€30) from your home country and extend it for 30 days. After your short trip outside Thailand, you get 30 days 'visa exempt' which you could extend for another 30 days in Thailand. 5 months already!

Nothing is certain until it is and this is still nothing more than a proposal, just like the 300 baht tourist tax before it which is supposed to have come in multiple times before.

Michael Dawson that is what I think too. There were same issues in Pattaya and Patong already years ago when it was 30 days, before Covid era. The only difference to then and now, more people make videos and more tiktok to publish every little case

"but no final decision or implementation date has been announced"

They've been saying they want to do this for a year without it actually happening.

So I'll wait for the final decision and a announced date it will happen before I tell people it'll be down to 30 days.

Nongnuch Kamdee Of course...but being widely leaked in a range of media outlets today! Want to cut down on abuses of the system, maybe especially on those that see Thailand as a new Promised Land (if you get my drift).
