Hi. New here . First post. I heard there is now a 10 year visa for living in Thailand. Is this true?

I have a criminal record. Not a bad one and not within 5 years.

Will this prevent me from living in Thailand?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the possibility of obtaining a 10-year visa for living in Thailand, specifically the LTR (Long-Term Resident) visa. Responses indicate that various categories are available, including one for wealthy pensioners. Concerns about a criminal record are addressed, with several commenters suggesting that past minor offenses may not hinder the visa application process, particularly if the record is old or the crimes were not serious. It's suggested that background checks are conducted in Thailand, not in the applicant's home country, alleviating worries for those with minor convictions.

You may want to consider getting the criminal conviction removed/expunged from your record. The waiting period prior to application will depend on your country.

What is the wealthy pensioner visa?🤦

Do you have an Australian Passport? If so, then your prior Criminal status should not be an issue… usually can’t obtain a Passport if you have been convicted of Violence or Robbery offences from my understanding.

There is unlikely to be any issue with your criminal convictions as you mentioned they are not serious, over 10 years convictions are often considered spent anyway depending on offense, I have been staying here on visa based on marriage, and also retirement visa and wasn’t asked for any police checks. Depending on the conviction some convictions can be removed in as little as 7 years and can also be requested to be removed particularly if you were under 18 at the time of offense, this how it used to work in Scotland anyway,

For those visas requiring a background check, what do they look for besides criminal record or bankruptcy issues? Do they check interactions with Facebook or other social media sites? How deep do they go into your personal life, does anyone know?

police check required

not deep. At one point they were trying to get people to give their social app information but it was voluntary. They gave up on that.

Background checks done generally in Thailand. Not in your home country. No worries if you want to apply for a long term visa.
