After reading a lot of blogs that seem to go nowhere, can anybody tell me whether there really is any such thing as a 5 year visa? If so, what are the requirements? Can retirees apply for it?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, there is a 5-year visa available through the Thai Elite program, known as the Thai Elite Visa, which requires a payment of 500,000 THB. Additionally, there is also a 10-year Non-Immigrant Type O-X visa targeted at retirees, which has different requirements. Both visas provide options for long-term residence in Thailand.

You are talking about the 10 year Non-Immigrant Type O-X visa which came out a while back

This link explains it pretty well, and most consulates have their website updated showing the requirements now

The only 5 year visa is the 5 year version of the Thai Elite Visa which costs 500,000 THB.

Jean, no need to marry anybody to remain here for life :-)

Robert A. Piccus lol another solution is to mary a pretty girl. lol

maybe yes but i am a pro in that branch... what afraid me is the number of car crash i saw in 30 years here and plenty overturn lonely.

Sean, still too many headaches to run a business here. If they have the resources for the Elite visa, then they will probably do private banking since the starting capital requirements here are quite reasonable.

Jean, perhaps reconsider your driving style if you deem cars a risk!

My solution to that (after 9 years here mostly on Tourist visas) is to set up a Thai company and launch a business here.

It took a couple of years to identify the right business and its taken longer than I planned to raise funding to get it off the ground, but I'm closer to the finish line (starting line?) with planned launch now in Q1 2018.

Sean, some are still weighing visa options as they intend to remain here long term and are tired of applying from the embassies in neighboring countries.

Robert A. Piccus i did 30 years ago but nowaday i find driving car or bike very dangerous. note that in 30 yearsvi do have 2 case, a dog that damage the front car and a big plastic box the i got in the shield...

It includes daily perks.

oups "unlikely", yeah if you do not use bike or motobike, you increase your chance to lives

No Sean, i purchased my visa 10+ years ago and its valid for life.

@Robert ***********
Presumably you don't have just the 5 year version.
Robert ********
I plan on milking my Elite visa for 30+ years...
Sean ********
I'm unlikely to die in 5 years and if I did I wouldn't care about the money or the visa.
Johnsuma ******
yep look very interesting (for the country in case you die 1 years late... there is no refund. lol)

OK, thanks! I thought as much. Don't know whether getting a 5 year visa is really that much better than a one year visa.

The 5 year visa is only via the Thai Elite program. There is that 10 year visa for retirees that came out a while ago.
