After reading a lot of blogs that seem to go nowhere, can anybody tell me whether there really is any such thing as a 5 year visa? If so, what are the requirements? Can retirees apply for it?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, there is a 5-year visa available through the Thai Elite program, known as the Thai Elite Visa, which requires a payment of 500,000 THB. Additionally, there is also a 10-year Non-Immigrant Type O-X visa targeted at retirees, which has different requirements. Both visas provide options for long-term residence in Thailand.

You are talking about the 10 year Non-Immigrant Type O-X visa which came out a while back

This link explains it pretty well, and most consulates have their website updated showing the requirements now

The only 5 year visa is the 5 year version of the Thai Elite Visa which costs 500,000 THB.

Sean, still too many headaches to run a business here. If they have the resources for the Elite visa, then they will probably do private banking since the starting capital requirements here are quite reasonable.

Jean, perhaps reconsider your driving style if you deem cars a risk!

My solution to that (after 9 years here mostly on Tourist visas) is to set up a Thai company and launch a business here.

It took a couple of years to identify the right business and its taken longer than I planned to raise funding to get it off the ground, but I'm closer to the finish line (starting line?) with planned launch now in Q1 2018.

Sean, some are still weighing visa options as they intend to remain here long term and are tired of applying from the embassies in neighboring countries.

I'm unlikely to die in 5 years and if I did I wouldn't care about the money or the visa.

OK, thanks! I thought as much. Don't know whether getting a 5 year visa is really that much better than a one year visa.

The 5 year visa is only via the Thai Elite program. There is that 10 year visa for retirees that came out a while ago.
