A friend on retirement visa heard that if you are out of Thailand for over three months, visa will be canceled. I don't think this is correct. She has planned to be away for 5 months.
Thanks!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The claim that a retirement visa will be canceled if an individual is out of Thailand for over three months is incorrect. Users clarified that as long as a reentry permit is obtained before leaving, one can stay outside Thailand for several months without losing their visa status. The visa will only expire if the person stays out past the visa's validity or fails to secure the necessary reentry permit for extensions.

Buy and use a Reentry Permit. You can go out of Thailand and come back. But it does not make the visa / extension last longer... If you stay out of Thailand past the expiry date - the visa / extension will expire (be finished).
If the Friend actually got a 'Visa' Canceled... Most likely that friend had an Extension of a O Visa and failed to get a reentry permit and just didn't understand what happened
I will answers questions the way I see fit. Take a hike. If you don't like my way of doing things then scroll. If you read the whole thing another person took benefit of the expanded discussion and other commenter helped out. The answers I sometimes pose are not just for the OP but others who do not fully grasp the info. For example some people erronously think that a reentry permit pauses the Extension and upon returning they pick up right where they left off with same time remaining as when they left.
Same concept - if what the OP's Friend head was a case of a person actually getting a Visa canceled (and not a rumor) most likely that person (who ever it was) likely had an Extension of an O Visa - left Thailand without getting a Reentry Permit and the Extension was canceled upon reentry! By the way I have read several posts over the years on the Thai Visa. com immigration forum where people had this very thing happen to them.
What is the visa or extension type? O visa with extension or O-A M first year? Reentry permits are required for one year extensions if one leaves the country and comes back
once you get the yearly extension from the immigration office (for 1900baht) you can immediately apply for a re-entry permit (single entry 1000baht or multiple entry 3800baht) which will keep your extension date from canceling when you exit/re-enter the country
I have a visa O and now I am preparing to ask for a year extension as I am retired. I will ask for a multi entry also as I have to go out and come back during several times. Thanks for your comments π

I had to go home to the uk on a personal matter , I had a multi entry already , I was away for over 5 months . No problem .. ( I had a problem with my condo but that was a different matter π ) .
a friend of mine on a yearly extension of stay based on being over 50 had to leave thailand and was in the US for 11 of the 12 months his extension was good here for. He flew back in and we went and got him another year's extension without any problem at all.
