TLDR : Answer Summary
When leaving Thailand on a marriage visa, it is necessary to purchase a re-entry permit to ensure your visa remains valid. This permit allows you to keep your visa status while you are outside the country. However, it does not extend the expiration date of your visa; upon re-entry, you will be stamped with the same end date. If you do not return by the time your extension expires, you will have to start the visa process over.

buying a multi re-entry permit is only worth the expense if you plan to exit and re-enter Thailand more often than three times during the one year EOS stay permit

Terminology is important . . . . . if you are on the 1-year Extension of Stay Permit based on marriage to a Thai wife, you are NOT on a "visa" but on an "extended stay permit". The visa this Extension is based on, is already expired and invalid. . . . . . . . . . .So this stay permit would expire if you exit Thailand without a re-entry permit you can buy on immigration or at the airport, for this stay permit. . . . . a single re-entry permit can be had for 1000 Baht, a multi re-entry permit for 3800 Baht. If you do not plan to exit and re-enter Thailand more often than three times within the validity of your stay permit, the purchase of a multi re-entry permit is wasted money

two entries on a single re-entry permit still save you 1800 Baht compared to a multi re-entry permit. That's $52.oo

yes, you can buy a re-entry permit at the airports, before the Immigration counters. At the BKK airport, the re-entry booth is in "Departure 2"

If you don't want your visa/extension to be cancelled the moment you stamp out through passport control, you must purchase a re-entry permit. The re-entry permit keeps your stamp alive while you are outside of Thailand. It does not add any additional time, as the end date of your extension is the same date even while you are outside of Thailand and when you return with a re-entry permit you will be stamped back in until the same date you had when you left. If you do not return in time to apply for your next extension, you will lose it and have to start over from scratch.
