4 years ago, i went to Vientiane, Loas from thailand, where i started my longstay visa, "retirement visa" process.

It was easy, got my Non "O" which lasyed 90days and not long after i finished the process in Chiang Mai.

So i have a Non "O" visa based on retirement

(I hope i have used the correct terminology)

My friend is wanting to do the same, is this still posable? Or have things changed?

Maybe the Non O visa can be obtained in Chiang Mai?

He is wanting to avoild getting the A O visa, with the complication of insurance

Thank you

TLDR : Answer Summary
The process to obtain a Non-O visa based on retirement has changed over the years. It is still possible to apply for a 90-day Non-O visa in Chiang Mai if certain conditions are met, including having at least 21 days left on their current visa. However, the requirements for documents have become more stringent compared to four years ago, with police background checks, medical certificates, financial proof, and a retirement letter from the consulate now mandatory. In contrast, obtaining the visa from Vientiane may also require similar documentation, yet some individuals have reported success. Notably, insurance is not required when applying for the retirement visa in Thailand.

I just got a non o visa for 90 days in Vientiane last week. I submitted the following - copy of my resume, copy of passport and Lao visa, letter from Bank in Thailand showing requisite funds for over 2 months, copy of my condo documents, police background check (obtained it in udon thani- took one week to get), certificate of health from a clinic. Cost was 2000 baht for the visa, 100 for medical, 100 for police check, 200 for bank letter. Hope they helps...

Thanks
@Tod ********
for the update.

I find it strange that its easer to obtain the long stay visa on retirement while in thailand than out. And you dont need to worry about the insurance.

Or maybe im missing something

nope, no insurance required

Hi Tod, is the documents required still the same as Vientiane? police back ground check, a medical certificate etc, For Chiang Mai? Thanks for your info on this
Tod *********
Nope in chiang mai you need the stuff I posted in the comment above this <- don't forget that Chiang Mai is an immigration office INSIDE thailand and has nothing to do with the requirements of that 90 day Non-O visa from the thai consulate in Vientiane that is OUTSIDE thailand.

They CAN get a 90 day Non-O visa inside the country at the Chiang Mai immigration office IF

they have 21 or more days left on their current 30 day visa exempt entry stamp, 60 day tourist visa entry stamp OR a 30 day extension from one of those

If using banked money they can prove that the 800K baht was transferred in from overseas

This is what Chiang Mai requires to get the 90 day in country Non-O visa

It is not all that easy to get a 90 day Non-O visa from Vientiane based on being over 50 anymore.

You need a police back ground check, a medical certificate, proof you meet the financial requirements and a letter from your consulate stating you're retired.
