Is it safe to return to Thailand soon after a visa-exempt stay?

Guess I’m looking for reassurance. I went to Thailand visa exempt for about 50 days and left on May 26 or 27. Due to a sudden change in schedule I’m looking to return in August, probably 4th-8th. With all the stories I’m feeling paranoid. I usually go twice a year for 40-50 days. Usually 3-6 months between trips. This one is a little close. Has anyone had problems with this situation? USA passport.
Answer summary
The post discusses concerns from an expat intending to return to Thailand shortly after a previous visa-exempt stay of around 50 days. The user typically travels to Thailand twice a year for extended periods, usually with a gap of 3-6 months between visits. Responses from the community suggest mixed opinions. While some feel that returning so soon should not pose a problem, others advise obtaining a tourist visa for better assurance amid heightened scrutiny from immigration officials. It’s acknowledged that entry ultimately depends on the discretion of the immigration officer.

It’s difficult to say. I go twice a year for 60 days each time with a 4 month break in between. They don’t like it and I’ve been told to get a long term visa. You just can’t be sure long term, but your next visit should be ok.

How much time have you spent in Thailand over the last year?

Sadly there is no way to give you any sort of confirmation. You never know what rules may change, what the IOs rules change, how they feel that day, if they had their coffee etc etc. You should be fine though.

If you know you're going to be staying beyond the 30 day visa-exemption, then get a proper tourist visa that covers your intended duration of stay. It seems like the METV is best suited for your situation.

OP
Victor Rothhaas I’m still trying to come up with a schedule. If I go next month then I won’t be able to go again for 6-8 months. I’m currently trying to figure out if there is a way to get the work days I need in first but it’s messing with a lot of plans.

Ray Barnhart I think you'll be fine, but there's always a risk when doing the visa-exemption and extensions repeatedly within a calendar year. Ultimately, it's up to the immigration official. I just think getting a proper visa is much safer, especially with the recent increased scrutiny.

Obviously not a tourist….but sudden “change of plans to return “means you need a visa. 🤨.

How’s that obvious? The sudden change was with work if you really care. I’d like to get back over since I’ll be busy for 6-8 months afterward.

180-Day Rule of Thumb: If you accumulate more than 180 days (6 months) total inside Thailand within a rolling 12-month period using tourist visas or visa exemptions, you face a high risk of being questioned

No one can say for definite

Getting a visa doesn't guarantee you entry. Perhaps there is a red flag against your name. No one knows except you and the IO so don't listen to people who say. Yes it will be OK because they don't know

You should be fine if your two trips per year never include taking an extension then, if/when visa exempt reverts to 30 days, you can continue this pattern by getting a tourist visa for each trip (and it will work out cheaper and less hassle than getting an extension).

Cannot see you having a problem. I know people that travel more often and have no problems.

I go twice a year, visa exempt as well . Upon arrival this week, the immigration officer asks to see my return flight information.. I obliged, and also told her I prepaid for all 28 days accommodations. I always carry a lot of baht and US dollars, also in the event they want more information.. you are never guaranteed, but lessen the chance that you will not be admitted. I am a US citizen….

Ray, my previous trip to this week was Dec. 20,2025 to March 19, 2026 . So only 3.5 months elapsed between trips 👍

so when immigration comes to assess your entry in August that trip will be part of the assessment. So add up the days from that trip, the days from your trip earlier this year plus the days from your proposed trip in August and if that will provide an indication

there is no one year period. There is no reset at one year. Immigration tend to look back over the past 12 to 18 months but they can go back much further of they choose to do so

in a one year period? Just to clarify
John **********
John **********
@Ray *********
the one year period is not relevant as immigration looks back over the past 12 to 18 months. But at 120 to 130 you should be OK, getting up to 150 or more can be a problem
Ray **********

OP
@John *********
is have to look but I think it would be 120-130 all together.(adding all three trips) There also would be 10-15 days overlap in a one year period. Start of that trip last year and end of this one. So only 115-125 in a one

Year period.

It probably would depend on your entry history. Reassurance would be getting a tourist visa for $40 USD.

Jim McGowan Tourist visa qualifies you for entry for pleasure purpose, so it is no reassurance, if immigration officer considers you as not being genuine tourist with that famous words: "Too much in Thailand".

Primož Rutar better chances than with a visa exempt entry. The OP doesn't say that his trips are other than pleasure No mention of wife etc...

I would be a little concerned!

Returning so soon could easily flag you for questioning mate!

Then it's up to the immigration officer who is doing the questioning!

I just returned from Thailand June 23, and I had bop problems, but my trips were 6 months apart!

3 months apart raised eyebrows !

There are always ifs and buts, but he says he only goes twice every year, so assuming that's reliable information, twice per year is likely fine since it seems there is a decent gap between trips. I can think of a million scenarios where twice per year is not okay, but this one seems fine.

yeah, if I go this time it’s maybe 2.5 months. I’ve never gone so close together. Usually go in April/May and in sept/oct. Work shifted and I’m trying to figure out my best move
