Has anyone used the Padang Besar road/walking checkpoint and successfully returned to Thailand on the same day?
Has anyone used the Padang Besar road/walking checkpoint and successfully returned to Thailand on the same day?
I can answer this from experience: I would keep away from that checkpoint if you're planning a same-day turnaround.
There is only one supervisor on duty. All foreigners—whether entering or leaving Thailand—are referred to them."
They will ask questions about your trip, including how long you intend to stay in Malaysia. A same-day return isn't the answer they want to hear. From my experience, they have a vested interest in you not returning through their checkpoint on the same day.
Another option is the Padang Besar railway station, which is only a short distance from the Malaysian immigration terminal. Be aware that there are no clear signs pointing you towards the railway walkway, so it isn't immediately obvious where to go.
The Thai train ticket office at Padang Besar station operates at approximately:
Thai time: 8:15–10:00 AM and 2:00–4:30 PM.
The problem is timing. If you arrive at the ticket office around 10:00 AM, you could have a long wait until it reopens at 2:00 PM. Even then, you're not guaranteed to be approved by Thai immigration for re-entry on the same day.
From my experience, a minimum one-night stay in Malaysia is what the supervisor wants to hear, rather than saying that you're planning a same-day re-entry.
If you decide to continue from Padang Besar to Butterworth, keep in mind that getting onward to Kuala Lumpur or KLIA at short notice isn't always straightforward. Long-distance train and bus tickets can be heavily booked, so I wouldn't depend on being able to simply turn up and get a seat.
A potentially easier option is:
Padang Besar
→ Butterworth
→ ferry to Penang Island
→ Penang Airport
→ fly to KL/KLIA
It's also worth comparing the cost before committing to the bus. The long-distance bus from Butterworth to KL/KLIA can be surprisingly close in price to a flight from Penang to Kuala Lumpur, while the bus journey takes at least around six hours.
Once you factor in the travel time and the possibility that buses or trains are already booked, flying from Penang can make much more sense.
