Could anyone let me know if they have heard of getting married by POA (power of attorney) in Thailand?

My Spanish lawyer (I’m a British National but a Spanish resident) tells me that this is possible, and I must be in Spain and the wife in Thailand in order to apply for her visa to join me in Spain.

Can’t find anything on internet

Thanks in advance 🙏

TLDR : Answer Summary
The possibility of getting married by power of attorney (POA) in Thailand is highly questionable. The standard procedure for marriage in Thailand requires both parties to be present in front of a clerk who validates the marriage. Comments advise finding a knowledgeable lawyer and suggest that the better option is to seek marriage directly in Thailand, where you must appear in person at the embassy to obtain the necessary clearances.

That sounds like a desperation marriage tbh , why don't you just go to Thailand get your freedom to Marry from the embassay in Thailand who will check with the Spanish government to make sure you can legally marry and are single. You MUST appear in person at the embassay in person and they will require passport , avidavid intending to marry, proof of address in Spain and proof of earnings. Its not as easy as you think and they are strict on this. You have two hopes if you want to get married by POA to a Thai girl, they are listed as follows.

1. Bob Hope

&

2. No Hope.

I think you need to find a new Spanish lawyer, one who knows what they're talking about.

Philip Preston. Lawyers will charge you more to tell you what you want to hear! 🤣

Getting married is an administrative procedure that’s done in front of a clerk in Thailand. Both the husband and wife -to-be must be present and the officer will ask questions to both the husband and wife to confirm the marriage is valid. If it’s valid, they will give the marriage certificate.

I can not imagine how a POA marriage is possible

I don't understand your point. You clearly don't know about international conventions on marriages. If a marriage is accepted by convention, the country is irrelevant. You're confusing different issues. I'm not saying what is lawful or accepted within Thailand necessarily. I'm making a point about different forms of marriage being accepted generally

but it's not in Thailand!

Doesn't necessarily need to be an Islamic country. Just needs to be accepted as a valid form of marriage

But... this isn't a Islamic country though 😕

Generally, though, it's not accepted as a matter of course, for obvious reasons

It's not uncommon in Muslim marriages where the marriage takes place over the phone
