Hi there! ☺️ I'd like to ask if anyone here has experience converting a Non-B to Non-Ed visa inside Thailand... My Non-B visa will expire on Sept. 30 and I'm planning to pursue a master's degree next month..

Is it actually possible to convert a Non-B to a Non-Ed visa without leaving TH? Or is it required to exit the country first before applying for the Non-ED?

If anyone has gone through this process or knows how it works... I'd really appreciate your advice.. Thanks! ☺️🙏
Answer summary
The user inquires whether it's possible to convert a Non-B visa that is set to expire into a Non-Ed visa for pursuing a master's degree while remaining in Thailand. Comments suggest that clarification on the current visa type is needed, as there could be confusion between a Non-B visa and a work extension. One response emphasizes that conversion isn't possible; instead, the user may need to cancel their work extension and apply for a new education extension, depending on the discretion of the local immigration office. Concerns about necessary paperwork from the school and potential bureaucratic challenges are also mentioned.

We need to understand what you are actually asking about.

Are you asking about changing from a 90-day non-B VISA, or you are actually on a work EXTENSION? A visa cannot be converted to anything. But if you are on an extension, then it MIGHT be possible, and still would not be a "conversion."

So which one are you actually on? The initial 90-day non-B visa, or a work extension, and the stamp in your passport says "extension of stay?"

sorry and thanks for the clarification.. "Change" of my current non-B to non-Ed. Does immigration allow changing non-B to non-Ed visa inside Thailand? Or, is it required to leave the country first and apply from outside Thailand?

FocusedKoala2589 You don't have a non-B. You have a work extension. You need to use the correct terms if you want the correct answer. You would also not be changing to a non-ED, you would be changing from work extension to education extension.

thanks for your response. I'm on a work extension... the stamp in my passport says "extension of stay permitted up to Sept. 30, 2026"

FocusedKoala2589 So you need to check with your immigration to find out if they will allow you to do this.

What you would do is get work from your employer that states your last day of work. You then use this to cancel your work permit and then take both of those to immigration to cancel your work extension. Yes, you MUST cancel it even if it's expiring.

At the same time you cancel it, you would then apply for a new extension based on education, rather than work. You're not changing any visa, because you don't have a visa. You are just applying for a new extension, except the reason for the extension is different from your last extension. The only issue is that some immigration offices might not support going from work extension to education extension, and that's why you need to ask them if they would allow it.

If they don't allow it, it means you would need to leave Thailand after cancelling your work extension (yes, you still have to cancel it even if it's expiring) and then either apply for a non-ED visa from a Thai embassy or consulate, or return to Thailand as a tourist and apply to convert from tourist to 90-day non-ED visa inside of Thailand. Once again with that last option, you would need to check with both the school and the immigration office if they allow conversions to non-ED from tourist inside of Thailand. It requires a truly massive amount of paperwork, so some schools either cannot or will not support such a conversion, and that's if your immigration office supports it all. Your school should know if it's possible though.
