Hello everyone,

Does anyone know whether it’s necessary for a family member to accompany you when collecting a Thai ID card?

Here’s our situation:

My wife has never had a Thai ID card in her 35 years of life. She is half Taiwanese and half Thai. We recently moved to Bangkok and have been applying for her first Thai ID card.

We’ve already submitted all the required documents to the district office, and her father was present as a witness during the application process. Everything seems to have been approved without any issues.

However, the officer informed us that her father must also be present on the day she collects the ID card.

Normally that wouldn’t be a problem, but her father lives in Taiwan most of the time and is very busy with work, so it’s difficult for him to travel back and forth.

I’m wondering if this is a standard requirement for someone applying for their first Thai ID card after so many years, or if anyone has had a similar experience.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Answer summary
The inquiry seeks clarification on whether a family member must accompany an individual when collecting their first Thai ID card. The individual is applying for their wife, who has never had a Thai ID card and faces a challenge since her father, a witness at the application stage, is unable to return to Thailand easily for the collection. Responses indicate that this requirement may depend on recent regulations, which have tightened witness requirements for first-time applicants.

Yes, as this is the First Time/First issue Thai Citizen ID Card to an Adult who was also born outside Thailand (Taiwan)? , then usually 2 witnesses were needed at the submission of the Thai ID Card Application stage, but with the recent tightening up of Thai Citizenship/Nationality Household Registration/Birth Certificates/ID Cards issues (foreigners illicitly gaining Thai ID Cards and Thai Birth Certificates), seems that more and more local District Offices (Amphur/Khet Offices) are tightening up their demands and, now, witnesses present during the actual ID Card issuance stage

Also, I would highly suggest to join the « Thai Citizenship Group » Facebook Group and ask there for more answers and real world experiences
