Is it true you are not supposed to do any work in Thailand as a foreigner? Even volunteer?
Answer summary
In Thailand, foreigners are generally not allowed to work without an appropriate visa and work permit. This includes situations like volunteering, unless a specific volunteer visa is obtained through a recognized foundation. Certain visa types, such as retirement visas, explicitly forbid any form of work, including volunteering. Although many individuals may engage in activities like volunteering without permits, this is technically against the rules and could lead to legal issues. It is advised to acquire the necessary visas and permits to avoid complications.

without reading any comments yet I will say no that is not true. lots of foreigners work in Thailand with the correct Visa.

if you have a non-o you cannot work and you cannot volunteer. legally however there could be exceptions like if you asked the village head man if you could volunteer at something to help out and he or she says yes.

If it's it's doing a job that may take money away from a Thai person then that is the reason for restrictions.

If you do want to work for avenues for that but you have to get your job first and they will get you a work permit with your proper Visa.

there are not too many jobs for that in Thailand I don't think.

unless you work for an international company and are stationed here, or stationed here to a government agency like an embassy.

of course I may be totally wrong because you got what you paid for.

and it's nonsense what some people are saying about you can't do work in your own home. sure you can.

it's the internet believe what you want.

As blanket statement that’s not correct. As already people pointed out: All depends on visa type and work/volunteer visa.

Many foreigners are obviously working here.

There are certain professions that are protected to Thai Only though

Built a thai temple free of charge took 3 months never had a problem.

Worked on my own house beginning of this year had local labour and just metres away from the local police station still nothing.

So legally you need a work permit but reality cops are not bothered.

1 month stripping a roof off and redoing a roof and cops even coming to have some local beer with me says it all 👍

Without work permit, correct, but volunteering work isn't been crackdown on. Police are not raiding animal shelters to kick foreigners out (95%+ of which) are there short term without a work permit. Police are going after scammers, call data centers, online casinos, but also people teaching illegally or singing at a bar. In brief, things that are more in the open and can be seen as stealing a Thai spot.

You can get a volunteer visa through a volunteer foundation. That will make you eligible to do volunteer work with the foundation. There are many volunteer foundations in Chiang Mai, Bangkok, and throughout Thailand. You can obtain a volunteer visa for as little as a couple months up to one year. They are renewable.

You need a work permit provided by an employer to be employed in Thailand. However, it is difficult for a foreigner to obtain a job in Thailand, no matter how qualified you are. A major exception is getting hired as a certified teacher by an international or bilingual school.

Many foreigners obtain work teaching English through either local language schools or through online schools. Online schools typically teach English to Chinese children living in Thailand. A TEFL or similar teaching certification is typically required. There are language schools in Thailand that offer such certification programs. But you can also obtain a TEFL certification online.

Dean **********
Dean **********
Bruce Macdonald good idea. You can find all the international schools in a certain area through a google search. Their websites include a jobs section. However, keep in mind the hiring period is usually in the spring, with the new school year beginning this month. But sometimes there is a rare position yet to be filled. You should also keep in mind that virtually all the international schools require teacher certifications as a hiring condition.

Good luck

Bruce Macdonald do you have a university degree? If so there is always English teaching a few hours a day at government schools. They can help you change visa extensions, and get the work permit. This should be looked at as a long term commitment, not short term. You can't do any work on a retirement extension.
Dave ****************
Dave ****************
Bruce Macdonald if you can find a job with a registered organisation they can assist you with a non O foundation visa.

If you like animals there are a lot of animal welfare charities such as Soi Dog you could enquire with. However these visas are not as easy to get since COVID, and your sponsor will probably expect you to pay the fees.
