Is it normal procedure for Thai immigration to keep a persons passport overnight or for several days when one applies for a student visa ? I have always been instructed to never part with my passport while traveling . This just doesn’t feel correct to me .

TLDR : Answer Summary
It is normal for Thai immigration to hold your passport for a short period, typically overnight or a few days, when applying for a student visa. This procedure allows them to process your application and verify your documents. When applying directly through immigration, it is generally considered safe, but it's advised to request a receipt for your passport. Caution is advised when using agencies, as there have been instances where passports were held for longer than necessary, leading to potential complications.
Yes that's OK..I had mine held for a day ..just ask for a reciet that they hold it

Yes, it is common for Thai immigration or the Ministry of Education to keep a passport for several days when processing a student visa or an extension of stay. This is standard procedure, as they need to verify your documents, process your application, and affix the appropriate visa or extension stamp.
However, if you are applying through an agent or a school, you should ensure they are trustworthy before handing over your passport. If you’re dealing directly with immigration, it is generally safe, but you can ask for a receipt or any official acknowledgment that they have your passport.
If you’re uncomfortable, you might inquire about alternative procedures, such as submitting a certified copy instead of the original passport until the final step.

I would take a picture of passport and the entry stamp prior to handing it over to immigration. Especially if you're going to be out in public.

It happenes. Getting a non b in Laos, they keep your passport foe 2 days 😵 nerve recking but it's part of the process. If you are doing it through your agency they keep it for a few days to save you the hassle of traveling with them everywhere. It's difficult but trust. They don't have I'll intentions
This person is asking about immigration, not about an embassy. And the embassies no longer keep your passport because it's all done online now. You don't even go to the embassy.
Exactly, AGENCY, not immigration. Immigration will never keep your passport more than overnight, and that's only at a very few immigration offices. Most will give you your passport back immediately along with a date to return.
I understand. My friend did his visa in Thailand to go to China. Kept his passport for more than a week. I am just saying it happenes. Always good to ask questions 👍 don't just accept but just saying sometimes they keep your passport. Scary but yeah.

Quite legal for an immigration office to hold on to your passport and give you it back the next afternoon with the visa in it as done it in Phuket many times ,agency's are another question as I would never trust some of them ,heard too much horror stories
But it's the law for foreigners to have their passport on them at all times 555. Better hope you don't need to change a hotel for any reason. I would have a panic attack without mine
you know some people are getting their fingers ready and putting their spelling Nazi hat on 555.

Sounds like you're using an agency and not applying to immigration yourself. There's only one immigration office I know of that sometimes holds passports, and that's only overnight and you pick up the next day. But agents will hold your passport for longer. If you're willing to risk that is up to you. It has happened in the past that agents will say they're taking care of everything and give stories and hold the passports for months, and then ultimately you'll find out they never did anything except take your money and you've been on overstay all that time. It's rare but it happens. There's always a risk if you're not doing everything yourself the correct and legal way.
ok well this is through a school so I doubt they are doing anything illegal as you are implying and I have to take my documents and passport directly to immigration myself . The school is not taking my passport immigration is .
when I got my ED in Thailand they gave me an under consideration stamp along with my passport. I then returned on the date on the under consideration stamp and got my ED visa in my passport. They never held my passport
