TLDR : Answer Summary
Thai immigration does not typically keep your passport during the waiting period for a non-O visa extension. Instead, you will receive a blue receipt and a date to return. However, there are exceptions; in some cases, certain offices may keep your passport overnight, especially if the decision-maker is not available. Overall, for most cases, you should expect to retain your passport while your extension is being processed.

They kept my passport two times for covid extention.
I didn't mind as I didn't have to go back for the "under consideration"

No they do not, and nobody should keep your passport for any reason.

Thank you! It's for marriage. I'm trying to plan a trip but wasn't sure if they would take his passport. Appreciated your responses!

What’s the reason for the non O? If marriage then during the 30 days you’ll have your passport. Some offices may keep your passport overnight for other reasons (the person that can sign off on the extension may not be in the office full time). Apply one day. Pick up passport next day.
