Is a 3-Month Valid Passport Sufficient for a Visa-Exempt Entry to Thailand for Two Weeks?

Good morning. My friend - a British citizen wishes to come to Thailand for a couple of weeks. He plans on getting a visa exempt stamp at the airport, however he has only three months validity on his passport. Is this likely to present a problem. I realize that 6 months validity is needed if you have a visa but I'm not sure of the requirements if you're only coming for two weeks with no visa. Any advise appreciated.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A British citizen can typically enter Thailand with a visa-exempt stamp for a two-week visit, even if their passport has only three months of validity. However, airlines may not allow boarding with such a passport due to their policy, as many require at least six months of validity. It's advised that the traveler contacts their airline beforehand to confirm boarding policies. Additionally, while entering Thailand may not pose problems, traveling to neighboring countries may be restricted without a passport that meets the six-month rule.

Also...his airline will ask for a return ticket. No ticket... Likely not allowed to board plane. So must be within 59 days after arrival as he can extend his visa exempt on arrival 30 days as Tod explained.

Definitely have him contact his air carrier BEFORE he shows up at the airport to check in for the flight to see what their policy is on flying on a passport of less than 6 months validity

He won't have ANY problem stamping IN to thailand IF his air carrier lets him board the plane. The rule stamping IN to thailand is your passport hast to be valid only for the days you'll be stamped in for to be allowed in.

Keep in mind he won't be able to go to ANY border countries to get a new 30 day stamp or anything because they ALL require 6 months on a passport to even stamp IN to their countries.

He can come here, get stamped in for 30 days, even get a 30 day extension if he wants from the immigration office for 1900baht, but he's stuck in thailand.

Problem may with his airline. They may not allow boarding with his passport only valid 3 months.

Almost all airlines use IATA Timatic to check passport validity and other entry requirements. In IATA Timatic the required passport validity for UK citizens to enter Thailand under visa exemption is the duration of intended stay.

If it is really a two week visit it would be no problem.

It start to give problems when he change his mind on staying longer.

Best is, get a new passport before travel.
