A UK passport question. Does it need to be less than 10yrs from issue date on day of departure, or do they go on 6mths validity after departure date? As my passport was renewed this before it expired, those months were added to the new 10year passport, so it is actually valid for 10yrs 9ths. EU countries are only allowing travel if passport is less than 10yrs old. It expires March 2023 so can this passport be used for Thai travel until Sept 2022, or will it be refused as it’s over 10yrs since issue?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The query discusses the validity requirements for a UK passport when traveling to Thailand, focusing on whether the passport must be under 10 years old or have 6 months of validity left after the departure date. The responses indicate that as long as there are 6 months remaining until expiry on the return date, the passport is considered valid. Concerns are also raised about possible issues regarding the 10-year rule when transiting through EU countries.

I came a cropper! Could not fly or enter Thailand my flight return date to uk was within 2 monthes of expiring date! But I just didn’t check.my fault. Had to delay trip a month until new uk passport arrived! 🙏🏻

I DID read though about someone who had an issue with the extra time on a UK passport while either RETURNING from abroad, or when travelling through the EU. (I can't remember which scenario it was.) You may want to confirm you can return with a passport over 10 years, or fly through the EU with a passport over 10 years.

Personally I would not risk it. There has been a lot of publicity about this recently with people being refused boarding their flights to various destinations. Let's hope everyone is right or you could easily come unstuck.

good idea, haven’t booked yet, but will likely be using Qatar, Emirates or Etihad as I don’t want to fly via EU

The extra time added to renewal isn't a problem as long as there's 6 months left at time if entry.

We've just had this with my partner's passport, as long as there is 6-months to the expiry date on your date of return you are fine.

Although the rule is 6 months validity left before travel there’s pretty much never any issue if it’s less and your exit date is earlier than you passport expires. Even then those on a long term visa would be allowed in as immigration know you can get a new one inside Thailand.

Not heard of any issues here with a over 10 year passport. The UK have been doing this for years and Brexit had no effect on Thailand.
