Anyone know how much time we need for the Mae Sai run to go out and come back in? I have around 1-1.5 hrs between b uses. Is that enough time? or should I change my schedule to allow for more time while I still can?

TLDR : Answer Summary
For a Mae Sai border run, having 1-1.5 hours may be a bit tight. Many travelers recommend taking the 8 AM bus to ensure a relaxed visit, allowing enough time for border crossing and any potential delays. Using a motorbike-taxi is suggested for a quicker journey to the border. Some travelers also advise grabbing lunch at the bus station to make the most of the trip.

What time is the best to take the bus tor a relaxed border run page is the page to visit. As travel times has nothing to do with Thai visa advice.

That's tight. Usually you get there after 12pm, you're at the border by 1ish. Getting back without eating or bathroom or a nice coffee break is no fun. I always take the 8am up and the 3.30 back. Easiest. Plenty fo time n no rush.

As you see, it's not necessary, and you can do the moto taxis for about 40 baht extra ea way (vs songthaew), but I've had time nearly run out when there were long queues of crossers and also when I found shops I enjoyed browsing thru as long as I was there. I don't mind spending the extra hour vs rushing to get back.
yeah I don't exactly want to waste time eating and hanging around either but it sounds like maybe I should change to allow for around 2-3 hrs of slack?

That's plenty of time but I suggest you take a motorbike-taxi to the border from the bus station instead of a Songtaew.
Also when you enter the Myanmar side you just tell the immigration officers "no shopping" and they will stamp you right in and out the same time. Turnaround at both borders should take no more than 30 minutes so you have time to grab some lunch as well at the busstation.
