How long does it take to get a DTV and add dependents in Thailand?

Hello everyone. Thanks for all the useful info on here.

How long should it take to get a DTV for me and then apply to get spouse and two children added as dependents?

I am thinking about Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia or US or UK, so appreciate broad range of experiences and expectations.

I am looking at either soft power or self-employment - I am exploring both options.

Many thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
The time to obtain a DTV in Thailand and subsequently add dependents such as a spouse and children can vary significantly based on multiple factors. The application can be submitted at the Thai Embassy or Consulate in your country of residence, and processing times may differ by location and nationality. For instance, processing in Hanoi, Vietnam typically takes about 5 working days, but this can reset if additional documents are requested. Therefore, the entire process may take between 2 to 5 weeks once initiated, depending on the efficiency of the embassy and the completeness of your application.

You need to research the processing time for the embassies where you potentially are eligible to apply... and you need to check if you can actually apply at the different embassies. For example: I am Swedish and I can apply in Sweden, Taiwan and Cambodia to name a few... I can not apply in the US, UK, South Korea or South Africa etc.

Each embassy/consulate have their own processing time (there's info on their web pages). There is also longer processing time for some nationals and you don't mention where you are from (Just examples: nationals from Pakistan and Nigeria can expect longer processing time than nationals from Germany or South Africa).

The processing time also depends on if your application is complete and wether the embassy see reasons to ask for additional documents or even call you in for an interview. There are too many variables to factor in, hence impossible to give you an answer.

To give you an idea though, I will give you an example on how to estimate the time... Let's say you are allowed to apply in Hanoi, Vietnam and that you hold a passport from a country without restrictions. The estimated processing time in Hanoi is 5 working days (not including the day you submit your application). You apply and after 4 days they ask for additional documents... that reset the processing time. You submit the requested documents on day 5 so the processing time starts over on day 6, it takes another 5 working days and then you get your approval. Add 2 weekends to that and the main applicant recieve their visa after approximetly 2 weeks. After that, you can apply for spouse and children and wait another 1-2 weeks. Summary: you should consider that the process can take anything between 2-5 weeks at an embassy that has a processing time if 5 days and you should not book a flight out of the country of application in advance.

Canada is very good place to apply from. Couple days to get an approval if your application is in order.
