Please forgive the ignorance, once the 60 day plus 30 day extension is done, how long before you can return to Thailand for another 60 plus 30 day extension? Is there a certain time you need to be out the country for?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Once you have completed the 60 day visa exemption plus a 30 day extension in Thailand, there is technically no official mandatory period you must stay out of the country before re-entering for another 60+30 day extension. However, given recent enforcement by Thai immigration, especially against frequent repeat entries on visa exemptions, it is advisable to avoid excessive back-to-back entries. Immigration officers may scrutinize your reasons for entering and could deny you entry if they suspect you are not just a tourist. Although the legality allows multiple entries, accumulating significant time in Thailand without a long-term visa could result in a denial at the border. It's also noted that while some individuals manage border runs without issue, excessive attempts may raise flags with immigration authorities.

Being on a 60 days tourist visa or a 60 days visa exempt is basically same thing. You're a tourist.

Just dont exceed 180 days within a 365 day period.
Jim ********
@Leon *******
after 180 days you become a tax resident.
Max *************
@Jim *******
That's not entirely correct.
Jim ********
@Max ************
you might want to read up on the Thai tax laws. It really depends on if you have assessable income, DTAs, when the money was earned, etc. bottom line you become a tax resident at 180+ days.
Jim ********
@Max ************
what’s not correct?

@Jim *******
As a tourist or even as a retiree on long term stay, you're not paying any taxes in Thailand. Period.

@Leon *******

No official statement exists on this. Generally, Immigration Officers have full discretion, but issues may arise if you stay 90 days within a 180-day period or six months within a 12-month period.
Jordan *****
Just pay an agency to do the border bounce in Laos, or Malaysia. You can still return without the help of an agency, but there is a small chance you will get denied entry.

If you get the 60 day visa exempt stamp and extend by a further 30 days at the Immigration office, Immigration class you as a tourist. If you then attempt to enter again on a visa exempt stamp, Immigration rightly consider that after on 90 day stay in the country that you are no longer a tourist but that you are attempting to live long term in the country. While there is no legal limit to the number of Visa exempt entries, once the Immigration officer believes that you are no longer visiting the country as a tourist he will deny you entry. If you have already stayed for 90 days on a visa exempt entry, then in future to guarantee entry into Thailand, you need to obtain a long term visa suitable to the reason for your stay.

Out of interest: Thailand has recently cracked down on foreign nationals abusing visa-free entry. Between January and May 2025, immigration officers denied entry to approximately 8,193 foreigners, many suspected of entering under the guise of tourism to stay long term in Thailand or work illegally.

@Paul ******
8193 if you think about it, is a very small number of denied entries. On Chinese New Year, there were at least 2000 foreigners doing border runs at Poipet. I honestly think that the so called “cracking down” on “visa exempt border runs is just hearsay.

In June; I returned from Cambodia on my 10th visa exemption in the past few years, a few weeks after the government announced on the news that they will do “rigorous checks” at land borders for visa exemption abuses and out of a group of 200 people no one was held for more than half a minute at the immigration booth
John **********
Nobody can answer this accurately. If you are still inside Thailand and want to get another visa exempt entry then I'd suggest using a border bounce company, they won't take you unless they can get you back in
Colin **********
There is no offical time or limit but you have to convince the immigration officer your a tourist and therefore no need to get a long term visa.
Wannikea *********
There is no certain time, but, immigration is cracking down on people using back to back visa exempt stamps, it also depends on which border you're using and either flying in or crossing a land border.
