Once a DTV visa is granted, how long do you have to enter Thailand and activate it? Is there a deadline for the first entry, or can you enter at any time during the 5-year validity period? In other words, does the visa become active from the date it is issued, or only when you first enter Thailand?

Once a DTV visa is granted, it is valid immediately from the date of issue for a period of 5 years. You can enter Thailand at any time during this period; there is no strict deadline for the first entry, as noted by several users in the comments. However, while you can apply for the visa up to 90 days in advance of your intended travel date, it may be wise to apply closer to your travel date to avoid losing part of the 5 years of validity.

You should not apply over 3 months before INTENDED travel according most embassies, so waiting a little bit would be better because you will loose less of the 5 years validity period then.

You do NOT activate a visa. The visa is issued by a Thai Embassy/Consulate and valid from the moment is it issued.

The deadline is the valid until/enter before date mentioned on the visa.

In other words, valid from the moment it is issued, in case of the DTV it will be valid for a period of 5 years.

At entry you get a period of stay, which is 180 days if you show a valid DTV.

To apply now or next week or next month is your choice.
