Has anyone here cancelled a DTV that was issued by the Thai Embassy in Hanoi?

I’m planning to return to my home country to apply for a Non-ED visa for my Master’s degree. I’ve heard conflicting information - some people say I need to personally go to Hanoi to cancel the DTV, while others say it’s not necessary and possible via email.
