TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the process of obtaining a Thai driving license as an expatriate. The user shares their experience of receiving a temporary license valid for one year, with a possibility to extend it for five years. Several comments clarify that the initial license is typically valid for two years, highlight the ease of the renewal process, and remind users about dress codes at government offices.

And before more people start repeating 2 years and 5 years, i close it down. Driving license, not really Visa related. Thanks Adam for the the clothing advice, I always where a speedo swim shorts to visit shops and Governments and a tuxedo when I go to the beach for a swim. I guess that is common sense, Have fun today and a nice weekend.

Reminder to all that they are now enforcing that you must wear long pants and shoes at government buildings or they won't serve you which has changed since I went last year for my bile license and shorts were ok. Got my 5 year car license on Wednesday at the main centre at Chatachuk and would have been done in an hour except when I got to the physical tests they said I needed long pants. Quickly went across to the market and was lucky to find some. Girls with short skirts are still fine though ๐Ÿ˜‚

2 years for your first licence that is temporary. The 5 year is a full licence

+1 for both comments above. First one is 2 years and renew/upgrade is a very easy and smooth process. My local land transport office don't get many farang and the tester went out of his way to make sure I understood the instructions for the tests.

Just renewed from 2 to 5 year, both car and motorcycle, 2 applications, 2 resident certificate, 2 doctor certificate was all that was required, applications completed by the guy at the test centre, all done in 1 hour

But you should have applied before it expired
