Wondering if anyone have had success getting a proof of residency from the Thai tax department? Reason I’m asking is that I need this document to show Portuguese authorities that I’m now residing in Thailand.

I heard from an agency in Pattaya that they can’t process this kind of document with the Thai tax department if you’re on DTV visa but maybe someone has other experiences.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post asks about obtaining proof of residency from the Thai tax department while residing in Thailand on a DTV visa. Several comments clarify that the required document, known as a certificate of residency, is actually issued by Thai Immigration, not the tax department. One user suggests using a Tax Identification Number (TIN) and passport as proof of tax residency instead.

Are you being asked by Portuguese Tax Authorities to prove you're a resident of Thailand for tax purposes? Or is it some other Portuguese Authority that wants to know your status? If it's for Portuguese Tax Authorities, then based on comments by

all you could do until now, is tell those authorities that you are residing longer term in Thailand, with proof (DTV & maybe rental contract, plus maybe a residence certificate from your local Thai Immigration Office) and advise the Portuguese that you can't provide any certificate from the Thailand Revenue Department until 2026,after you've lodged a Thai tax return. I'm guessing that you'd prefer to be taxed in Thailand rather than Portugal.

yes 100%. But does it really suffice to tell them that I can’t obtain this document?

I was asked by my Danish insurrance company that transfer my private pension to my Thai bank account for a Thai tin number. I got that from a local amphur. It was obviously the 1st time they did that

aha! How did you get that TIN number? You also translated it to Danish?

no translation - got a little document with the tin number on from amphur and sent a photo of it to Denmark

I can't answer your question if it will suffice, but do you have any other options? I don't know.

I don’t know, that’s why I’m looking around :) I spoke to my lawyer in Portugal and she was aware of the problem but didn’t really provide a resolution

it seems like that was the indication in the original post from the way I read it.

Here are the requirements to get one yourself although I would first try using your TIN and passport as proof of tax residency.

@Pete ******
Certificate of Tax Residency is more substantial than TIN or Passport. I have one from Australia to ensure I'm not required to pay tax in Thailand

thanks! How can I get this if I just moved here tho?

if you just moved here you can not be a tax resident. You must first qualify through time spent in country in a tax year.

if I moved here in September 2024 can I then obtain one?

to obtain the certificate you need to have filed a return. The earliest you could do that would be Jan 2026.

you qualify in July 2025 as a tax resident.

the "certificate of residency" is from Thai Immigration, not from the Tax Revenue Department

@Nongnuch *******
they are not talking about a Certificate of Residency from the Immigration dept. They are referring to a Thai Tax Residency Certificate issued by the Revenue Department. Separate things for separate purposes.
