Hi, a couple questions regarding getting a Thai DL:

Do I need to have an IDP in addition to my Canadian license?

Is there an extra step to add a motorbike designation?

Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
To obtain a Thai driver's license as an expat, it's recommended to have an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home country license to simplify the application process. For motorbike licensing, you will need separate applications for car and motorbike licenses, including individual requirements such as a residence certificate and medical certificate. If your IDP does not cover motorbikes, you will need to complete the full course and tests required for a motorcycle license in Thailand.

Hi thanks everyone, one follow-up: my Canadian licence is only for cars, so will this make getting a motorbike licence in Thailand more difficult? I don't really need this as my driving in Thailand will be in a car, but I just thought if it's not that difficult I may as well get the motorbike licence as well.

if you dont have a motorcycle licence in your IDP....u will need to take the full course....5hrs of theory lessons at the DLT which after u need to take theory test

to pass and after take a practical test at the DLT in order to get your motorcycle licence

Where I live, if you show an IDP when you apply, you have to do the emergency stop and depth perseption test, but you dont have to sit through the 1 hour long instruction film, like most thing though I suspect it depends where you apply !

My recent car and motorbike licence application experience, and documents requested:

* Passport

* Visa Certificate

* Medical Certificate

* Host country driving licence with IDP

* Certificate of Residence from Immigration (need Passport, visa, proof of residence, 2 passport photos, and note : you need separate certificates for a car and motorbike licence at 500 THB each)

* Receipt of confirmation that I completed the online driving course-in my phone)

* Completed several practical response tests.

* Collected both car and motorbike licences for 10THB each.

Whole process took about 1.5-2hours.

thanks Ian, did your home country DL include motorbikes? (Mine doesn't)

@Craig ******
yes, it did, and it was my host country rather than home Country eg. Malaysia whose licences are produced in English

@Craig ******
you’ll have to take all the tests first a bike license unless maybe an Agent can help you

You should have an IDP issued by the appropriate authority in the country your licence is from. If the IDP shows you have a FULL bike licence (from memory category A) you can get this at the same time
Graham ******
It's easier with a IDP as you don't do the test and the car and bike applications are two separate applications so two of everything, residence certificate, medical, etc.

You need to make a separate license for motorbike & car

All the paperwork requirements along with how to make an appointment and the training video can be found on the DLT website
