Answer summary
To convert an Australian driving license to a Thai driving license, you will need several documents including a residency certificate, a medical certificate, and possibly proof of your long-term visa or work permit. It's typically advised to visit the Department of Land Transport (DLT) for the specific requirements, which may include passing a basic visual test or reflex test. Your Australian license remains valid after conversion. Additionally, online learning and testing for a QR code may be required. It's recommended to get copies of all documents ready for submission.

You need work permit or some sort of longer term visa. Med cert. I was able to do this myself when working in Krabi. They can give you a list of what you need at the transport office. I did have to go online and show them the government website about NSW licenses. Only had to to do reflex test, colour blind test and sit through a video in thai language. Got 2 year license initially now I have 5 year license. Make sure you have bike license on your Aussie one,. Ls was all I had, that was enough to get both car and bike licenses in Thailand. They are 2 separate licenses.
No idea where you are based, I went to the DLT yesterday at Banglamung I was refused an appointment because there was only 6 weeks left on my ‘Retirement Visa’ then they told me there is 2 month waiting list albeit the place was empty ?
Car was different as my license showed HT on the front and no calm explaining would they accept that the back of the license clearly shows I had a car plus other licenses
Had to sit the full test
Ironically since I’ve had my both proper Thai licenses, I’ve never been stopped even at checkpoint
Des Dp exactly. The first time for the first 2 years license, walked in and walked out with the certificate. The second time (for the 5year) the receptionist asked me how much I weighed. Stamped and out the door.
