Good evening

Can you purchase a car in Thailand with a UK licence and a 1968 3 year IDP on a non O spouse visa?

Thank you in advance.
Answer summary
Yes, you can buy a car in Thailand with a UK license and a 1968 3-year IDP on a Non-O spouse visa, but you will need a residence certificate to transfer the vehicle into your name. Although anyone can purchase a car, transferring the ownership typically requires holding a long-term visa, like the Non-O visa. It is advisable to check with local Land Transport Offices as regulations may vary by location. Additionally, while the IDP is valid for driving for 90 days continuously, obtaining a Thai driving license is necessary after that period.

Remember that although your IDP may be valid for 3 years it can only be used for 90 days continuously. Beyond that you'll have to leave the country and re-enter to start the next 90 days.

Alastair Phillip Patterson Thank you Alastair, I didn't know about this prior to posting my question. Would it be a stupid question to ask why.

Craig Powell Basically the 90 days determined whether you are a temporary visitor or a a resident, over 90 days classes the person as a resident and under Thai motor vehicle act section 42 a resident is required to have a Thai driving licence. Hope that makes sense.

Craig Powell IDP is a temporary permit/mutual agreement, it's not designed for living in a country. Anything over that 90 days will require a Thai car/bike licence.

If you come and go visa exempt (Australian), are you able to purchase second hand?

Frank Gasparre You can buy but my experience has been that you need a Non O (other long term visas may be acceptable) to be able to register a vehicle in your name. You may have seen that I have had a discussion about this with
@Brandon ***********
. All I can say is that the two DLT (Department of Land Transport) offices that I've used - Korat and Pak Chong and most sources online say that you need a Non O. The only way to find out is to check with the DLT office nearest to where you stay. As with Immigration matters, its quite possible that different offices have different requirements.

Craig, my discussion with Brandon has thrown up another point. If you buy a vehicle that is currently registered in another province you will have to go to the main office in your province to do the transfer. I think that's because of the plate change - local offices don't make plates. If its currently registered in Bangkok and you take the option of not changing the plates, your local office should do it. I did that with my truck but I will be changing that this year - as I said before, it can be a PIA keeping it registered in Bangkok.

Another item Craig. If the vehicle is currently registered in a province other than your own, you will probably have to get new plates for it at the same time as you do the transfer. Make the transfer then return a few days later to pick up the plates. The exception is for vehicles registered in Bangkok. Its optional but they can keep their plates and you can just change the name and address. I won't bore you with the details why but if you don't live in Bangkok, opt for changing the registration to your province - some things can be a PIA later if you don't.

Phil Wilson Thanks again Phil, it's all more complicated than I first thought. However, I am pleased I asked, it's better to be in the know.

It sounds a little complicated and it certainly is compared to doing it all online as we do in the UK, no plate changes, no provinces etc. Its not that bad though. The best way is to go to your local DLT office and ask them what you need to do. I think they can also give you the transfer documents. The main thing is, as long as you have proof of residence, its all do-able. Sorry to repeat this but make sure the seller gives you a signed power of attorney form + copy of their ID card if you are buying privately. Buying secondhand through a dealer is much the same but they often palm you off saying they'll get you the POA later. You will have a hell of a time trying to register it in your name without the POA. Much the same as any other country - check the chassis number on the vehicle matches the one in the registration book (known as the blue book for a car, green for a motorbike). A mate of mine bought a motorbike recently - brought it to me to check it over - chassis number on the bike didn't match the one in the book. Bought it off Facebook, account now closed and phone number invalid - almost certainly a knocked off bike.

No licence required for the purchase but you will need to transfer the vehicle into your name. New or secondhand? New, the dealer will do it all for you but you will need to obtain proof of residence in Thailand through either a residence certificate or a yellow Tabien Baan. Note, most but not all Land Transport Offices will accept a Yellow Tabien Baan. Secondhand - same as the above but you need to be careful that you get the correct documentation for the vehicle. Transfer form, Blue Registration Book, Sale agreement and, if the previous owner is going with you to the LTO, you will need a Power Of Attorney from them. Depending on its age you may need to have the vehicle safety checked before the transfer takes place. Most LTO's have a test centre either attached or nearby. Whether it needs a test or not you will then have to purchase Por Lor Bor - compulsory basic third party insurance, again there is usually an insurance office at the LTO. Armed with the correct documents, test certificate and insurance - you're good to go. Sounds complicated but really its not. The only part that can be time consuming is your proof of residence. Oh, you will have to pay a small amount of 'transfer tax' on a secondhand vehicle.

@Brandon ***********
didn't mean your visa when he said 'none of that matters'. Yes, anyone can buy a car but to transfer it to their name they must hold a long term visa or extension of stay. You hold a Non O so you're fine.

I couldn't say if its just my LTO but I've registered 3 at my local LTO. The other 2 had to go to the main provincial office at Korat because they came from out of province. Both Pak Chong and Korat LTO's required a Non O visa.

while that might be the case at your DLT, there are others that won't care. A long term visa is not an official requirement to transfer a vehicle to your name.

I guarantee you Brandon that you cannot transfer a vehicle to your name without a long term visa. I have 2 cars and 3 motorcycles in my name. I've made many transfers. I didn't say you can't buy one, I said to transfer it.

the validity of an IDP is not the same thing as how long you can use it. Many countries only allow you to drive on an IDP for a certain amount of time before they expect you to get a local license.

None of that matters for buying a car. Anyone can buy a car. You'll probably need a residence certificate from your immigration office in order to transfer it to your name, unless you have a yellowbook/pink ID card.
